I was one of three that had a knee fusion in 1958. It was still experimental. The knee fusion allowed me to.live a full life. I was a Polio with a paralyzed limb. The fusion gave me stability. I was 15 at the time and the physician took great care to evaluate my canidacy and keep me engaged throughout the process. Yes, it changes.hownypu do things, but it allows you to function better.in many ways. The airlines did not understand the issue, so in 1991, I enlisted the aid of the FDOT and the regulations now.permit a person with a fused knee to have a bulkhead seat. 58 years later- the fused knee is fine.

I had a knee fusion done 13 years ago following a car accident. I am glad this was done and get along pretty well, but I have chronic pain and difficulties.

Would love to talk with someone else with this unique condition.

I know this might be some time after your surgery but I hope it turned out well.

I, too, have had a knee fusion. After this length of time if you are having pain, see your primary. Perhaps physical therapy would help. However, I have not had pain since my surgery. Perhaps an ortho guy who can xray and find the problem. Good luck.

I have a completely stiff knee due to arthrofbrosis (straight leg that can't bend even an inch) so it's already like arthrodesis but then very painful and i can't walk without crutches. I wonder if you drive a car with a fused leg, how do you sit in it? Is your chair adjusted or where do you put your leg?

I was glad to have found this topic and have read all posts. Certainly a small percentage of people dealing with this - It is nice to see some people sharing their experiences. My husband who has had three total knee infections in the last year now has a decision to make - knee fusion or mid thigh amputation. He certainly is leaning towards fusion - he wants to keep his leg as long as he can. I will support whatever his decision. Surgeon says to expect a leg that is 4" shorter after surgery. These posts now have me wondering about back problems and wear and tear on his hips with possible hip replacements in his future?? Would like to hear more about anyone experiencing this.. Thank you in advance!

is your fused leg your right or left?
If right leg how do you arrange your body since you can not bend your leg.

Pix,
I have a fused left knee and intramedullary rod running from the ankle to just outside the femur. I have done work with making a bicyle that would work and have come up with a viable solution.

Hi there

I wonder if anyone who has previously written on the post could get in contact and help me out.

I am writing on my behalf of my Dad (67 years old) who has had a rough ride starting from July 2022 when he underwent TKR of his right knee.

The knee was never quite right and after it being confirmed he was suffering from a bad infection at the start of 2023, he underwent a two stage TKR revision involving complex plastic surgery.

There have been a lot of issues with his care and significant delays/lack of communication, but ultimately, he was left with necrotic skin a d has been informed that the wound will now bot heal.

He has now been told by his consultants he has a number of options. Firstly, further complex plastic surgery (taking muscle tissue from his back and transderinf this as a graft to his knee).

As a family we have decided this is not an option we want to follow through with, my Dad's mental health is really shot and he does not want to undergo this high risk traumatic surgery again, with the possibility the skin graft will still not take.

As such we are left with fusion of the knee or above the knee amputation.

He is in no immediate rush to make a decision and is trying to hold off until my wedding day on 16th September but it would be extremely beneficial if someone could reach out who has undergone a knee fusion to give some first hand experience regarding their limitations, what they can do on a day to day, and just someone who he can related to, he would be extremely grateful for this.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Charlotte
