I'm a type 1 diabetic and have been for about 25 years. I'm currently taking novorapid and levemir. I take levemir at night (50mg) around 10 pm and I take 1 ml of novorapid for each 5 grams of carbs. I'm to understand that levemir lasts 24 hours and perhaps longer. However, based on some symptoms I have I did some research on the Internet. Something tells me that it doesn't last 24 hours. I believe I have the correct dosage for me because my BG is pretty level all day even when I miss a meal. But, here's the thing. I feel really bad in the mornings. So, I decided to measure by BG in the evening just before I went to bed around 10am (9.0). I got up at 2am and tested my BG again (2.5). HMMM, that's a serious hypo, I think in my sleep. Can you help (levemir in the night). Do you think if I split my dose that hypo would go away or should I consider taking another type of insulin?

Hi, You are definitely experiencing a serious hypo in the wee hours of the morning. This is of concern. I think you have the right idea about splitting your levemir dose in half and taking one in the morning and one in the evening before you go to bed. Make sure to talk to your doctor about this. It seems that splitting your dose would generate less of an extreme BG level. I don't see how this could make your situation worse. I've always heard that levemir is supposed to last 24 hours or even better. It could be that your metabolism and perhaps other factors are different from others. Trials that have been done on levemir probably averaged their results and so are not representative of each and every individual throughout the day and night. In actuality, the trials don't predict the individual and the results are indicative of the population. You know levemir can be divided up into 2 doses per day and maybe that's what that is all about. Taking one dose would appear to be convenient more so than effective. It's easier to remember to take it once a day and twice. The only thing you can do is experiment with it and try it and see how it goes. I wish you the best of luck with that. Let me know how it turns out. I'd really like to know.
