I’m a type 1 diabetic and I take Levemir. I try to keep my bloods under control and my insulin dose has been constant for ages now, but last week I was in the car park at the super store and reversed into someone. I didn’t see them and when I got out of the car I felt really woozy and weird like I was having a hypo. I managed to sort myself out and there wasn’t any damage to the cars but I don’t know what to do. The police weren’t involved. Do I have to inform the DVLA? Will it affect anything? It’s never happened before and I’ve felt fine since – what should I do?

Hey! It sounds like you’ve had a really bad experience in the car, but remember no one was hurt and everything worked out okay, but you were lucky. But from a safety point of view, both yours and others there are several things you should take away from this. Firstly, as you are a Type 1 diabetic you absolutely must inform the DVLA that you are diabetic – if not they can fine you £1000! Worse than that, if you knowingly drive with a BG lower than you may be charged with driving with undue care and attention or dangerous driving. And that is really important. Secondly, if you think that you’ve had a hypo at the wheel you should test your BG as soon as possible to check if you actually are having a hypo. If you have more than one hypo while you are driving within 12 months then you should inform the DVLA.
You said that this has never happened before, and not happened since, but keep an eye out. You don’t need to contact the DVLA as things stand, but if it happens again soon you must.
