Hello everybody, Boy, I had a big bowl of spaghetti last night. Oh, it was so good. It has a ton of cheese and meat in it, just the way I like it. I haven't had any pasta in a long time so that made it especially delicious. I checked my BG levels after 2 hours and I was okay. I use novorapid. But 3-7 hours later my BG levels went sky high. Does anyone know what happened. I mean was it the spaghetti, meat or cheese or perhaps the combination of everything. I happen to be on the thin side of things and I'm trying to gain weight so I want to take in carbs and fat. Is there a way I can stop this BG spike so many hours later? Thanks.

Hello, I believe your spike is due to a combination of everything. Part of it is the initial delay of absorption. Fats take a long time to digest and so do proteins and that delays absorption. Complex carbs such as in spaghetti also take time to digest and hence a delayed absorption. Your novorapid took care of the initial sugar you absorbed but is not long lasting and left you vulnerable to later digestion and absorption. This problem may be difficult to remedy using insulin that you inject. My guess is that you ate a really big helping. More than you should have and that really delayed some of the digestion. It seems like you would have to take in more insulin hours later to bring your BG down but I don't know how you would calculate that. Perhaps take a small amount and see what happens in 10 minutes or so and if that's not enough inject some more. Overly, I think I would just cut back on the portion you take. Small amounts of pasta surely wouldn't do that. Perhaps you need to consider taking in a half a cup to 1 cup at a time and limit your pasta intake to once a day. I like Italian food as well and I particularly like lasagna and eggplant Parmesan and I do have these once in a while but I have a one cup serving. I don't need to gain weight so I have to watch it.
