I have scaring in my lungs and my doctor wants to do a open lung biopsy to see if he can find what disease causing it. Of the possible diseases, how treatable are any of them?
The scarring won't ever heal.
If it is an infection, like TB, then the scarring will not progress any further once treated.
Scarring can also be caused by breathing certain materials, such as mineral fibers or asbestos. We'd treat symptoms in that case.
It is important to find out the cause. Good luck.
Treatment depends on the specific diagnosis, which is based on findings from the clinical evaluation, imaging studies, and lung biopsy.
Corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents, and cytotoxic agents are the mainstay of therapy for many of the interstitial lung diseases.
