Researchers had shown meditation and yoga can increase the thickness of the grey matter in the cortical region of the brain that is important for reducing the age related thinning of cortical region.

Each form of mental exercise would have a slightly different pattern of cortical thickening, depending on what sort of exercise is involved.

The study involved 20 participants, family people and workers who practiced yoga for about 40 minutes a day. MRI showed that regular meditation leads to structural changes in areas of the brain that are important for sensory, cognitive and emotional processing and may slow age-related thinning of the frontal cortex.

Most of the regions that were identified in this study were found in the right hemisphere that is relevant for sustaining attention.
