Please tell me more about risk factors for development of osteopetrosis. I’m 34 years old female and I’m worried because my mother was suffering osteopetrosis and had bad fractures. I have daughter and I would like to know more about protection and prevention of this disease. Are hereditary factors present in osteopetrosis? Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately that’s true. Osteoporosis may be due to heredity. Also, body size is one of the risk factors, so small, thin-boned women are at greater risk of osteoporosis. What you can do is to take calcium and vitamin D recommended daily intake, to avoid alcohol and cigarettes, to exercise. Inactive lifestyle can lead to weaken bones. At your age recommended daily intake of calcium is 1000mg and for your daughter is 1300mg.
