to the guest that replied on 2-7-13. i had a hemorrhoidectomy for 3 internal prolapsed grade 4 and 3 external hemorrhoids 11 days ago. the surgeon also cut out 3 football shaped pieces of skin that was excess die to the prolapse. i can say after 11 days i feel great no pain at all excpept with bowel movements but its gone within half hour after. i till have the constant oozing and discharge though. i didi call my doc and she said is totally normak to have the discharge up to 8 weeks post surgery. she said its just the incisions healing and expelling it. so hand on there. it will get better just takes a little time. i hope your pain subsides soon! im so thankful i was one of the lucky ones to be painfree since about the 4th day post op. i thank GOD EVERY DAY FOR that! so if you r still having the oozing just know it is normal :)

I was operated on Feb 16, 2013. I don't really feel significant pain. Thinking to give up on pain killer now. When I woke up after operation, I drank 1.5 Ltrs of water + a glass of juice. Passing urine was just too tough. But, in like 4 hours urine passed too. Two days, and I still experience some trouble passing urine. First BM occured after hardly 24 hours. And, I've had 4 BMs in 48 hours after the surgery. BMs are not very painful experience either. But, there definitely is feeling of discomfort. Passing gas or stool is kind of tough. Hoping to recover soon though. Planning to start going office from Feb 20.

I had a hemorrhoidectomy on 4/2/12. Originally I was told that this would be an easy procedure and that I would be out 3-5 days for recovery. I would have some bands placed and that my hemorrhoids would pass in my stools. Well after I woke up from my anesthesia, I was told that it was far worse than originally diagnosed and that I would need about 10-14 days to recover. Still, I was not made aware of the torture I would face in the upcoming days. The next day(Wednesday) was fine, except for the pain that i needed to manage. I was prescribed Oxycodone, which took care of the pain. I had a HUGE issue urinating. That was painful feeling that you had to go and couldn't. I called and the nurse advised me to stand in the shower and that should help. Tremendous relief. Thursday came and I still had not had BM until that evening. That had to be the worst pain I had ever experienced in my life. I had sweats, chills and shakes for about 10 minutes. I felt as if I was going to pass out and had nasuea. Needless to say after that painful BM the next few days I was not able to go. I felt that I had to, but I think my butt said NO!! Sunday Evening and Monday Morning was hell! I called the Dr.'s office a few times on the weekend and Monday Morning and they weren't helpful except for recommending a different stool softener/laxative Miralax because I was constipated. I was able to go Monday night and had the same pain, more bleeding, chills and shakes. I just wanted to know was I crazy or was this torture normal! I found this site and postings and was relieved to read some of the similar horror stories and more importantly the advice. The one about putting your feet on a step stool when you are having a BM was very helpful. Put me in the mind set of having a baby. The position is better for that and it does feel like you are having twins! But it was tremendous help! I developed a routine of BM, Sitz Bath, Shower, rest. It's been a week and it's getting better. I've learned a lot about how the meds increase constipation but you need them for pain, so you are in a catch 22. I'm able to come off my meds now and take Tylenol. No more constipation but I'm not letting off my stool softeners and fiber! I'm starting to get that knifing feeling during BM's now but they go away after the Sitz baths.
To those who are considering having this surgery, there's no good news to share. It's torture and hell!! I'm not trying to scare you but I'm trying to be honest. If I had known this before my surgery, I wouldn't have elected to have it. I hope that technology advances to improve this procedure. I actually believe that I should have been hospitalized during this recovery. Luckily my wife is a nurse, but I still went through hell. I prayed more than usual. And was very specific! "God please remove this pain from me!"

I had hemorrhoidectomy 11 days ago and I went through same experiences. I underestimated this surgery. I spent the first 2 days in the bathroom a lot because of constant urge to urinate & pain and feeling miserable. Each time to have a bowel movement,, stabbing pain & burning sensation is beyond tolerable. I was taking oxycodone about 3 times for 3 days then cut down to once a day when pain is bad. I found sitting in real warm bath help me as much as pain meds. Urge to urinate is much better now but still I have low degree sensation. Surgical sites where hemorrhoids were removed were left open to heal, so you will have serous bloody drainage and it is so important to keep it clean, I take sitz bath after each urination and BM and whenever I feel burning sensation. In fact, multiple real warm sitz baths, antibiotics for a week, stool softner 2 times a day and Miramax daily helped me a lot. I stated to see light at the end of tunnel after 5-6 days and I am slowly feeling better each day.. I understand feeling close to normal will take a few more weeks. Hope sharing my experience will help others.

I had this procedure done in 2008 and now I have another large roid in one of the other two veins. I am absolutely terrified of this. I was NOT back to working condition for at least 4 weeks, and had to BM in the bathtub for about 5 months post -op every single time.
What they don't tell you is that when they put the stitches internally, they are in constant friction with the inside of your anus. That causes your sphincter muscle to go into spasm, which is the same biological mechanism as childbirth. AKA I was in a constant state of childbirth for 7 full days. As a 21 year old male, you can imagine how unprepared for that I was. I joke with girls sometimes that they do not have it THAT bad, and that I know what it feels like...
But this surgery should be deemed unavoidable. I hadn't made a BM in literally one month prior to this exam, and when I got out of the operation and my bowels voided themselves, the BM literally came out with so much force it bounced off the ground and hit the hospital ceiling 10 feet above me. Looked like an absolute murder scene.
Good luck

I suppose everyone's story is different so I can only add mine in the interests of balance. Had my surgery 14 days ago now. Ended up staying in hospital for almost three days as I couldn't pee well enough. Those days in hospital were pain free for me thanks to the medication although peeing wa frustrating. The worst time for me was on return home with my concoction of tablets - codeine, ibuprofen , paracetamol and lactulose. The feeling of always wanting to go was there and it was hard to resist not pushing too hard. However, in my case the stool was soft and just felt weird in passing and as if it wasn't finished. Tip from me would be to accept it and not sit long. I used to go straight into a warm bath which helped reduce that feeling. For the first week it was difficult to avoid going four or five times For not much result.
Went back to work yesterday. Can't say I'm over it yet but things are def better. I've been lucky in that at no time was there the excruciating pain that others seem to have suffered. I can't sit in one position for long but there is no real pain and I am off all the tablets, just Lactulose which I intend to keep taking for a while yet.
for me, it wasn't (so far) the torture others have mentioned. In fact I would say pain wise it has been less but I hadn't reckoned on the amount of disturbance to my system which is uncomfortable and a bit frustrating. If it works though on balance I would say it has been worth it for me. God only knows what the full surgery is like though.

Had the operatin8 days ago. 3 internal ones.
Oh man what a pain for first 5 days. I stopped taking pain meds after day 4 since it causes constipation and I wasn't going to have any of that.
Many of you take sitz baths and that is wonderful but what I found works best and easiest for me was to take a 1.5L bottle of soda, empty it and pour warm water in there with some salt. Then after BM I go to shower and then I use the bottle to wash the back area. Instant relief and no mess and time wasted making the sitz bath.
My problem is that after 8 days I can't control my BM, it just comes and gives me 5-10 seconds notice before it has to get out. Sometimes it is not enough and I drop a load in my pants, very embarrassing and disheartening not knowing if this loss of control is temporary or permanent. I hope it’s only early days (day 8) so I might be ok in the long run.
Food that I eat will literary go through me in 1.5 hours so so and I will have BM. Is this normal for you guys? Or can you control it better?
