well ladies,
I just want to let you know that I WAS considering a TL but...after reading all of your issues, I think you've all successfully talked me out of it. I've never had any period, cramping, headache, or depression issues at all and do not want to start now. I will be delivering by c-section on feb 15th and will just have to use contraception or talk to the hubby about a vasecomy.
thank you all for you personal stories.

I thought that after a TL my problems would be over. But instead it has been a six years of pure hell.

I had my TL in May 2001, immediately I felt phantom pain where I must of been cut. This symptom has lasted for six years. I thought I was losing my mind. I had went on anti-depressants because I was suicidal. I am unable to lose weight. My skin felt like ants were crawling all over my body. I thought by changing my diet this symptom would change but it has not. My hair and skin is very dry; hair is falling out and is thin. My heart races all the time it feels like a heart attack.

My period is very month to month where I can tell if it is going to be a very heavy with large clots or very mild with no problems. I can't sleep, very fatigue. Is there a doctor anywhere that could help us?

Wow ladies....I think I now have some answers thanks to all these postings. Answers that Doctors couldn't give me.
I never put 2 and 2 together until recently. Here's a bit of my history...I am 34 now, and elected to have both a tubal ligation with ovarian ablation, after having 3 wonderful boys. I had my proceedure performed in June '05. Things were great No more menstrual cyle, no worries of pregnancy.Perfect!!! Until Dec. of that year. I thought it was just a Flu or virus. I started with abdominal pain, muscle aches, leg cramps(or the creepy crawlys), headaches, dizziness, my arms going numb, all with no fever. I got very weak. I finally caved in and went to see a doctor when the symptoms wouldn't subside. And the body aches so severe I was in tears. I have seen multiple specialists(except a GYN, yet), and every test known to man. I had a heart cath, blood tests, MRI's, CT's, neurological tests, etc... And still nothing found significant enough to form a diagnosis, I was beginning to think it was all in my head and just crazy. I am still experiencing symtoms, such as depression, mood swings, irritability, heart palpitations, fatigue. This has effected not only myself but my family as well. Then during my last ER visit 2 months ago, I presented with abdominal pain so severe I thought I was gonna die!!. The ER performed another CT, I was expecting them to find nothing. But they found a cyst on my right ovary and a growth in my Uterus(nope not pregnant). I am scheduled to see a specialist(GYN), and after reading this, I intend to ask if this PTLS could be the root of all my problems. All I want is resolve...and to be my old self again. Wish me luck, and good luck to everyone else who has posted on here. Hopefully some day a doctor will discover how this can be treated. Sincerely Yours, Miserable.

Thank God you're not doing it! It's a big mistake and there are many other forms of contraception! It's nice to know that we can make a difference if we speak up!

Just wanted to put in my two cents ~ I had my TL in 1997 after my last child was born. My doctor waited for 6 weeks after the baby to do the surgery. He said it was easier on a woman's body if the swelling from having a baby has went down.

I started having problems immediately. Cysts and pain were my biggest complaints. I hurt literally everyday. It didn't matter if I was on my period or not. More days than not I was on my bed with a heating pad laid across my mid section. It kept on getting worse and worse. I also had the dryness and pain and bleeding during and after sex. I have gained so much weight that I am considering lap banding surgery now.

It finally got so bad that my doctor finally decided to put me on Megase. It has completely stopped my periods and thus the cramps, heaviness, and cysts. That part is a God~send.

The bad part is that I still have the leg crawlies (restless leg syndrome), and have been diagonised with fibromylagia. It is rough not feeling human anymore. I get up in the morning and can't wait until I get to go to sleep at night!! SO SAD :'(

You all sound soooo familiar to me......a lil history on myself. Im a 33 yr old woman with 4 kids. I was fixed right after the birth of my 4th. I was 23 at the time. By the time I was 24, I was dx'd with fibromyalgia, by the time I was 25 I had social anxiety disorder/panic attacks, by the time I was 26 I had gained about 40 pounds! suicidal thoughts, yup. at one point i was rx'd 8 different meds! dry skin and hair, periods heavy irregular gushing severe cramps. So I started looking into my symptoms and like alot of you stummbled across PTLS. Dr mentioned me going on the birth control pill but what in the world was the TL for then? sometimes i even had 2 periods a month. my hormones did have an imbalance, I just found out a couple of months ago. so I research tubal reversal and after 5 years of waiting Im now recovering 18 days post op TR :-) I havent got my period yet, but I will tell you im feeling back to normal, my hair has even regained shine! I just wanted you ladies to reconsider hysterectomy, as i truelly believe that will be the final outcome if you dont get relief from PTLS. but TR is a way i believe. even my blood pressure is back to normal. Ive got color to my areola's. Im just happy all the time now. no more frowning or being pissed because thats what im used to. I hope I helped someone, and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

I have been having very heavy periods too. they are heavy for the first few days then slowly get lighter and lighter, this usually last up to 21 days. i only have 10 to 7 days a month without it :'( I have bad cramping while the flow is heavy (Thankfully) but the rest of the time its just the continuous flow that never seems to end. I have bad mood swings, feel depressed, my memory is worse than my grannies lol. I had my tubual in 2003, but never made the connection of all my problems until recently.

I have been searching for answers since my doctor has been less then helpful and have found that there is a connection between post tubual ligation, hormone imbalance and lack of progesterone (a hormone).

For all of those who are reading this and are at their wits end and have no where else to turn, I highly recommend you google the above mentioned and see the simularities. Could it be as simple as a progesterone imbalance????

I am currently taking a synthetic drug of progesterone after discussing this with my doctor. It has only been 2 weeks but it has cut the end of my period down to 8-10 rather than the usual 20 odd days, so i consider that a small success. I am due for my period in a few days and am a little apprehensive about how at will go. At the moment the jury is still out, but if it is at all helpful i will keep u all informed.

Good luck to u all :-)

Hi ladies,
I'm 43 years old and had a TL at age 25. Three months after having the TL we moved to Australia from NZ with our two children. I was told by my female GP (I think?) that my periods might get a bit worse after having my TL. Well, over the first 5 years that we were in Australia I gained about 40kg (about 90lb?). My periods became horrendous - heavy and clots and painfull. I started having panic attacks and massive anxiety problems. During this time I got interested in natural medicine, herbs and eventually nutrition and exercise.
We lived in Australia for 14 years and I gradually stopped going to doctors realising that they generally just created more problems.
I never realised that all the problems that I was having were a result of my TL until recently and thinking back to when all the problems started it just clicked into place! This has been going on for me for almost 20 years. The only reason that I'm still here I think and functioning is because of my passion for learning about staying healthy. I have found that if I am very strict on my diet and exercise and keeping my life balanced I can function reasonably well. However as I'm getting older it is becoming harder.
As I said, I didn't know PTLS existed until recently. I came across it when researching Natural Progesterone cream. I have been using Progesterone cream for about 6 months now and am getting a lot of relief. It is going to take some time, but straight away, although I had some exsacerbation of symptoms at the beginning I could feel things improving generally. My anxiety is subsiding, I have NO breast pain now and all the lumps in my breasts are GONE! My periods have gone from 9 days with a 21 day cycle, to 4-5 days and a 26-28 day cycle and no flooding. I'm finally managing to lose some weight again also. Progesterone levels affect thyroid and other areas of the endocrine system.

This is worth trying!! Synthetic progesterone won't do the same job. Do a some research on the net and find a practitioner that knows about it. The test for progesterone levels is a saliva test. Blood tests show incorrect results. If anyone wants more info email me swoledge@gmail.com

How did we not know about this! I had my TL in 2005 after my twins were born, the day after birth. Now i have 4 kids, so i thought the TL was a good idea because I didn't want anymore kids. Immediatly after the surgery, I knew I was not right, but I figured it would go away. Now almost 2 years later, I am still not right. The periods are soooo painful and heavy. I get clots, crashingly fatigued, etc... After reading some of the symptoms, everything is starting to fit into place. Now I feel that I am a canadate for this. Is there any relief? What can I do? I have a past with depression, ovarian clots, panick attacks. The reason i figured I would get the TL is because it is permanent with no worries of pregnancy. The birth control gave me high blood pressure and I couldn't remember to take it everyday. I wish I found this information before I had the procedure. Now what are my options? Can someone help me? Please email me at

Thanxs to anyone that can help!!!!!

Have you all checked out www.tubal.org and the info on PTLS? I have has nearly all of the symptoms and have been dealing with them for over 7 years. I am a different person because of the tubal ligation, wish I would have known the symptoms before hand. Check out that site, it will answer tons of your questions plus you'll just feel better knowing you are not the only one!

Hello,

I have been trying to find out why I turn into this horrible person for a day or two before my period starts. I had a TL two months ago. I have not had many side effects...yet. The periods start heavier and the cramping is nothing like I had before. I also had endometriosis and a tumor on my left ovary removed at the time of the TL. I am normally a nice, calm person. I become irrational, overly emotional, and my moods swings like a pendulum. I cry for no real reason. My poor family gets the worst of this. I never was a sufferer of PMS and now you can find my picture in the dictionary under, horrible, for those first few days. I feel like I am going crazy and then I go back to normal. I feel so sorry for my family. I can seee myself being hateful and cannot seem to stop myself. I am not sure what to do.

Hi, my friend got her tubes tied in Febuary 2007 after her 4th baby in December..she is 30 years old. Every since then she has had a problem with her legs..(swelling, painful) The doctor thinks it was mabey a reaction from the anesthesia and is also Rheumatoid arthritis. She tells me it is called "dura sema nadosum" I dont know how to spell it of course but thats the gist of it. Im hopeing it isnt gangrene infection? The doctor has her on a steroid and tells her to stay off of her legs and How is she gonna do that with 4 kids? I dont know if I trust the doctors diagnosis on whats wrong with her. she is gaining weight from the steroids probably. I am worried and trying to help her find an answer. :'(

I am going through these problems right now. I had a tubal ligation last year immediately following my last c-section of my 4th child. Ever since then I have had severe moods swings, depression, anxiety (on anti-depressants). Severe bloating, cramping, very heavy periods. I get a bad taste in my mouth, occasional rapid heart beating and everynight I have night sweats! I feel like I have PMS, constantly and I really hate feeling like this. It has affected my family. I have had ultrasounds and a D&C to check for fybroids etc... and nothing has been found. I feel like I am crazy. I am so thankful to find this site because my doc thinks it may be in my colon and I dont think that I think its to do with my female organs. I am glad that I am not alone, but I dont know how to approach my doc in this matter, any suggestions?
