I came across this forum and thought I would share my experience with depression medication during my pregnancy in the hopes of preventing at least one mom-to-be from using meds while you're pregnant. I am a woman who has suffered from severe depression ever since I hit puberty, my body/brain has never been able produced the right balance of "chemicals". I have been on many different meds as the body does build up an immunity after some time. Having been on Paxil for 2 years, I found out I was pregnant and wondered right away if it would affect the baby. My doctor sent me to see someone who specialised in medications during pregnancy, this doctor re-assured me left-right-and center that taking the well-known drug Paxil during my pregnancy would have NO ILL EFFECTS on my baby and this was a SAFE drug to take.......I now know that you can NEVER know what the effects of ANY medication will do to your unborn child. Sure the development of your child in the womb is going perfect "physically" but what about mentally?? There is NO doctor ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD that can tell you that an antidepressant will never have any effects on your baby, no matter how many Medical Degrees you have... it's just not fore-seeable. My daughter, now 13 has been through hell and back, having finally been admitted to a mental health unit in the childrens hospital in our area for a last resort "proper diagnosis" of what was only ADHD at first, now had been diagnosed with ADHD,Aspergers,OCD, depression and we are also now exploring some sort of paranoid disorder as well. PLEASE PLEASE ALL YOU MOMS-TO-BE, TRY AS HARD AS YOU CAN TO COME OFF YOUR ANTIDEPRESSANTS DURING YOUR PREGNANCY/BREASTFEEDING TIME. While it may seem IMPOSSIBLE, keep telling yourself that it's worth it in the long run. Being off your meds for just one year while your baby grows healthy and normal inside will give your child a chance to thrive and live without the PAIN of mental and psychological even physical abnormalities. My one question to you is Will you be able to live every day knowing that you could have prevented your child from a lifetime of suffering through countless trials of meds, doctors appointments, therapists, bullying (inevitable) also keeping in mind your own emotional struggles and relationships. If I can convince even one mom-to-be to be strong and come off your depression medication for the long term well being of your child then I feel great knowing that MY childs story and pain has not been for nothing.Thank You all who read this. and GOOD LUCK.
