Hi, i'm 15 and I have a slight protrution my sternum (approx 1- 1.5 inches). I'ts just been really bothering me lately and I figure that I probably didn't have it untill recently because I can't really recall ever worrying about it in the past. I think that puberty may be a huge contributer to it considering that I've started to grow alot recently. It's kind of bumpy and feels really wierd and I'm sort of self conscious about it but I'm hoping that it will go away in a couple years when my chest muscles and bones start to fill out.

Hey, i'm 15 and i have this same problem, my sternum sticks out abit (about 1 inch) and more so on the left side than the right for some reason. If any of you guys who replied back in 2005/06 saying that you were 15 and had the problem are reading this, please let me know if its still a problem now when you're 17/18. thanks.

Hi, I'm seventeen, and I've had a sort of left-sided Protruding Sternum ever since I was in Elementary! Back then I was teased because of it, but now that I'm in high school no one seems to notice it--but I do. I'm very self-conscious of it, and I never wear bikini's or anything even slightly low-cut, because I'm afraid it will look too weird.
I believe it is also the reason my left breast is slightly larger than my right, and that also adds to my self-conscious feeling.

I'm hoping that someday it will just go away, but it hasn't yet, and I'm worried that it never will. :(

I also have a protruding chest, and i am 14. Honestly i do not feel bad at all about having a chest that points outward. Honestly i don't think anything is wrong with it. I think it helps me with sports, too. I never really get tired (unless i'm in the heat) and i think that is because my heart and lungs are larger than the normal persons. Also my friends sort of like it. It is also a good way to get the ladies 8), if you know what i mean. Also i showed one of my teachers it and noticed a slight increase in my grade for that class. the only bad thing is that is starting to go away because i am starting to workout and lift weights. Honestly i don't know what i'd do without my awesome chest.

I'm 16 and have this problem. I haven't had it since birth, because doctors never said anything about it. It seems like one day when I was 12 I went to school, and people started asking me what was wrong with my chest. It never physically bothered me, so I ignored it. Then one day I went to the doctor and she said that my breast bone was protruding out of my chest, but as I get more muscular and bigger that it will recede back in. I wondering what kind of exercises would target the right chest muscles to push to help it recede/render it unnoticeable.

Hmmmmm........ I'm am so surprised that so many people got it reaching puberty and that it went away around 17. I'm 14 and obviously I have the same problem. Working out really helps. Just do push ups when you wake up and before you go to bed. I noticed it getting better in about three weeks, but it's still not gone completely. The only thing I'm worried about is going through four years of high school and that nagging thought "What if it never gets better?!?"

i am 14 and have the exact same problem i found that the only way to get rid of it is by doing push ups. they may not be fun and you may not see results right away but if you work at it it really help.

Hi, I’m 16 and I came here looking for answers on how I could get help on my petruding sternum. I was in between the ages of 14 – 15 when I noticed that my sternum had been somewhat shifted on the left side. I grown a significant amount between the past 2 years height wise and assumed that part of my body was just growing faster than other parts. I am extremely thin I’m 16, 6’1, and weigh 124 lbs. about 2 years ago when I first discovered my petruding sternum I had talked to my family doctor and he said that I shouldn’t worry about it, and that I will grow into my chest over time. He also said that the reason you don’t hear about it often is because most people are embarrassed by it, which is relatively common. Basically I’m just “Skin and bone” as my Mom puts it; so that’s why I’ve been working on my upper body strength.

I’ve found that both pressing and doing pushups are the most effective because it puts the wait across your chest and will begin to pull back on the muscles across your chest. So as far as I can see now for me and most people, the basic steps to filling out you chest is to…

(Knowing this usually occurs during teenage years).
1. Work your upper body strength through High School (or sooner) by pressing and doing pushups to get some width in your chest.

2. If you’ve not seen any improvement after about 2 years you should consider getting a brace.

3. If that fails you could always consider surgery.

I hope this helped a little bit; I’m still pressing, working out and hoping that the physical activity will fill out my chest and level out my sternum.

Thanks for your guys’ help.

hello to everyone reading these posts.

I am a 42 year old woman and I too have this problem. When I was younger I did not notice this problem at all. I also have small breasts and so I feel that it is quite noticeable. I do not know what you can do to correct it. When I was younger I was much fitter (still very lean and fit) but I did lift weights and do a great amount of exercise more than I do now. Also, my breasts were much fuller prior to breastfeeding, so perhaps that is why I never noticed it.

I have found that wearing certain clothing accentuates the problem and so perhaps this is something you can do to help yourself feel better - pay attention to how your clothes sit/cover you.

This problem still bothers me, a lot, but you learn to live with it. Try to look at the bigger picture and feel grateful for having an otherwise healthy body.

I am 20 going on 21. I have a protruding sternum and have since I went through puberty. I'm not too tall 5' 11', but I am skinny so I think that has something to do with why my sternum still sticks out. I have very little muscle on my chest so there isnt really anything to cover up my sternum.

My theory is that as you age you put on more weight whether it is fat or muscle and this helps cover your sternum so your chest looks flatter, but though it looks normal your bone will still stick out/in. Otherwise, the people who have just gone through parts of puberty fast have to wait the rest of it out so the rest of their body will grow in proportion to their chests.

Hey Everyone, for one, I have a protruding sternum and have had for as long as I can remember.  My family said I had a "chicken breast" because the tip of my sternum stuck out so far.  I can't remember a time when I didn't have it, and I'm now 57 and I still have it.  I was born with a heart murmur and have since grown out of that, however when I was younger (much younger) I was extremely skinny.  I'm not that way now, in fact I'm 6'0" and just over 200 lbs., yet I still have the point of my sternum sticking out.  I've also noticed the ribs that are connected within this area have a tendency to dislocate very easily which effects my asthma quite a bit.  I'm not a muscle buff guy, in fact it is still very hard for me to build muscle in my chest area.  I have good size arms, chest, not so much.  At my age, do I still have to be concerned?

im 14 and have had this since about 6th grade, and that was around when i hit puberty. Thats when i heard it usually started. and i was wondering too, if that it can cause abbs to be really uneven since its kind of connected to the ribs. mine is one the left side so i was wondering if there is any way to reduce or make it go away?  but i think it helps me more athletically like another person said. also i was wondering how common it is and if its normal for it to be sore at all?
