I am trying to help my mother as much as I can with her problem. She is entering her menopause and her depression is killing her. Not to mention the other problems, both mental and physical... Why is psychotherapy an important part of depression treatment? I mean, shouldn't medications be enough for her problem?

Yes, they should, but psychotherapy alone and in combination with meds is the best possible treatment for depression. Actually, if possible, medications should be avoided. They will help her, but most of them contain substances that might cause the occurrence of so called side effects like nausea, headaches, some might even worsen her mental state.
