My sister was diagnosed with rectocele recently. She was pretty surprised with it because she thought that only women who gave birth have this kind of problems. I would like to know more about my sister's condition.

Women who have never had children can also develop rectocele. Risk factors for rectocele include difficult childbirth and the use of forceps during delivery. They occur when the rectum pushes the back wall of the vagina forward which causes a prominent bulge into the vagina. The symptoms of rectocele can include: a sensation of pressure within the pelvis, lower abdominal pain, lower back pain, a bulging mass felt inside the vagina, vaginal bleeding (non-related to the menstrual cycle), painful or impossible vaginal intercourse, constipation etc. A rectocele with no obvious symptoms doesn't need medical treatment. But, it is important to pay attention to diet and other factors that contribute to constipation. Treatment options are high fiber diet, fiber supplements, at least 6 to 8 glasses of water per day and some stool softeners. If the rectocele doesn't respond to other treatments and is causing symptoms, surgery may be needed.
