Up to 60% of people with diabetes mellitus suffer from gastrointestinal tract symptoms, including constipation, that arise pathogenetically from a disturbance of the autonomous nervous system.

Treatment necessitates long-term intake of laxatives, proper diabetes control and other accompanying general measures such as adequate amounts of liquids, dietary fiber and exercise.

Slow transit constipation, which is typically observed in diabetics, can be best controlled with polyethylene glycol, bisacodyl or sodium.

As a diabetic for 13 years, I went through this problem. I over came this problem by drinking warm to hot water. For sometime forget about taking in any cold things which include fruits and even water. No leftover food. Cook small quantities and consume when it is hot or warm. Taking Isabgol (a husk like flower) for a few weeks once daily greatly help. Keeping body warm helps a lot too. Even in summer try to use an electrical fan instead of aircondition below 25 degrees.

Making a habit of starting the day with hot tea and light excercise for bowl movement and taking hot tea after lunch and dinner really helps almost everybody. If he is above 60 years, try to give him soft food like porridge (Chinese have very good receipies to make this dish interesting), properly cooked green leafy vegetables reducing yeast products like breads will help. Try to make or find bread with no or less yeast.

I am just trying to share what really worked for me and my father :-)

Constipation is when you have a bowel movement less than three times per week. When you do go, the stool is hard and difficult to pass. There are several natural ways to prevent this condition. Most of them take just minutes a day.

Your father should follow these steps to cure the constipation naturally.

Drink plenty of water. Most people who suffer from constipation are dehydrated. Water is essential in moving waste matter through the colon. Drinking 6 to 8 8-oz. glasses of water can help prevent constipation.

Eat a high fiber diet. Fiber is an important element in promoting healthy digestion. Fiber helps to add bulk to stools, making them easier to pass through the bowel. Your diet should include fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Avoid dehydrating liquids such as soda, coffee and tea. Avoid too much alcohol consumption, as alcohol also has a dehydrating effect on the body. Cut your intake of meat, eggs, cheese and refined processed foods.

If possible ask him to walk ,regular walk can prevent constipation.

Cleanse your colon with natural remedies such as Colon Sweep. There are products available that are made with natural ingredients, including psyllium husks, and can help to cleanse your colon of built-up waste resulting from constipation.

Take natural remedies such as Natural Moves that can relax the bowel, ease tension and promote regular bowel movements. Many such products are available online or at health food stores. Natural remedies
