What complications may be caused if retropharyngeal abcess is not treated? Is it more dangerous than common bacterial throat infection? I’d like to know more about its treatment and diagnoses. Are antibiotics effective? Is it usual disease in kids?
Retropharingeal abscess is usual infection in children under the age of 5.

It has to be treated by surgical drainage and intravenous antibiotics. Complications that may occur in untreated retropharyngeal abscess are osteomyelitis, mediastinitis, and airway obstruction. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of upper infections of respiratory system may prevent development of abscess. Throat culture is done for identification of causative bacteria.
