Hey guys! I'm 23 years old and had surgery on my L5-S1 disk about 3 weeks ago. The first two weeks were pain free but there seems to be some pain returning in the past few days but not nearly as severe. I had a large protrusion and suffered with it for 3 months before surgery. I read that it's common for someone with an L5-S1 nerve root being impaired to have a spasm in their buttock, that might make the surgery seem ineffective, but simple physiotherapy should sort that out, I hope. My toe is still numb and foot burns at times. Loss of sensation in the skin by my hamstring. But I'm positive, there will be pain and tough days, but we've experienced that before hence the need for surgery. Just do your prescribed exercises, rest and I'm sure it will turn out great. Good luck with the recovery!

Hi there, just read both your posts......I to am a female who hurt herself at work at the age of 35, leaning into a bin.....I had charlie horse pain in buttock and L4 & L5 herniated/bulging discs...I had surgery for this, no fusion as this is not a option i would consider, but they cleaned up discs and around scatica nerve. Pain from scatica gone, low back is still painful if i overdue it. but here is the catch and maybe you both will understand this when I try to describe this pain, walking, sitting everyday life stuff you move and you get this sharp intense pain that shoots up the inside of groin area and radiates from top of head to tip of toes and seems to hurt on femur bone almost to hip.....well it took 8 years to finally diagnose that from back injury my hip has compensated for back...I had anthogram done(yes it hurts) now going to see specialist to see what needs to be done, bone shaved on hip, and nerves in hip that have been hurt removed for better lack of words. Hopefully I can get back on track as I am still young enough to enjoy life and want my quality of life back.

Diary of a ruptured disc.  Twenty years ago I had a ruptured disc.  I was shopping and it hit me like someone had shot me.  It was in the hip area.  Severe pain for two weeks and then bad pain.  By the time they decided to operate, I felt better and decided against the surgery.  Fast forward to Dec. 27, 2013.  Same pain.  Woke up and knew I had a ruptured disc.  Never had a back ache, all in my butt and hip area and down my leg. Sciatic nerve.  I went to bed for 15 days, taking strong pain pills.  Horrible pain even with the medication.  Over the counter medication does nothing.  On the 15th day the severe pain left me as suddenly as it came.  That starts the first day of healing.  I had bad pain until Jan. 20, 2014 and then steady pain, but durable.  6 weeks since first pain Feb. 7 and am in 4th week of healing.  I am glad I have ridden it out without surgery. Would I do it again?  I don't know.  The reason for this diary is to remind me.  Hope this helps someone.  Also always take your pills with yogurt. I am walking a lot now and do several exercises.  Don't exercise with the severe pain.  I used cold packs all the time with the severe pain.  Heat made it worst.  I am a walking golfer and long to get back on the course.  Good luck.  bebe

Hello,
I got my ruptured disc at 28 and became lame. As a solution, obeying a nice doctor's advice, I did lay supine whenever I got a chance. Lameness disappeared, I am now 66 and feeling like a boar. -Ask my wife- I accomplished what I dreamed. So that doctor gained me a brilliant life.
Please quit horseback riding till you are totally healty.
Regards

Hi, I have very similar to yourself except I started with horrific back leading to leg pain, with the the leg feeling dead from top to bottom down the back of the leg, bottom of the foot & side & 3 toes. To help with the pain I live on morphine patches, changes every 72hrs. I have been like this for 7 months. Then had a operation on 14 Feb to release the nerve which is embedded in the prolapsed disc. It did not work there was too much risk to release the nerve, so bone was cut away to create more space. Now 2 months on I am about back to where I was before the opp. I also have ridden horses for the last 30 years seriously, before my opp.
So you are not alone, I suggest morphine patches help loads with the pain, but they do have side affects. I am off to see my surgeon in a month, so I will let you know how I get on & what is his suggested next step. Keep your pecker up you are not alone.

I am a construction worker in my mid 30s and blew out my L4/L5 a few months! Worked in the most agonizing pain I have EVER felt in my life, excruciating throbbing In left calf( felt like it was in my bone), left ankle & top of left foot for 2 months! Lost 25 pounds, wasn't eating, sleeping 2-3 hours a night if that, was working 6 days a week 10 hours a day intense/heavy physical labor, I was at my wits end and had a major breakdown mentally & physically! Ended up that I couldn't walk anymore on my left leg, before that I would literally break down crying at work the pain was so bad! Anyway got both discs shaved down 8 weeks ago and feel like a new person! Had reaccuring nerve pain from week 2-week 4, surgeon has me taking Vitamin B once a day to help nerves heal! Has helped me tremendously and haven't had any pain since! Back surgery was the way to go, I wouldn't have been able to function if I hadn't decided to get surgery!

I am a 45 year old female that has the same issues as you. I had been dealing with severe pain in my left buttock all the way down my leg. I to have 2 herniated bulging discs L4 - L5 and L5-S1 with dehydration in both discs. In Dec 2013 I had surgery to remove the bulging off my nerve. It has been 6 months after surgery and was doing well. I have noticed the last few days that I am having pain again but prior to this the pain was pretty much gone. I had a new MRI done yesterday to see what is going on. Not sure what to expect but what I can tell you is to try the surgery. I went over year in so much pain before having the surgery and don't regret it. My problem is that I have a extremely physical job. I am on my feet 8 hours a day and do a lot of twisting and lifting. So my concern is that I may have ruptured again. Look into surgery...my doctor told me that it is not a cure but that your pain level would be a 2 or 3 instead of a 8 or a 9 on the pain scale. Good luck and I hope that this helps.

It's been almost 2 years since I had my back fusion and I had my L5 and S1 discs removed because they had 2 massive herniations and then one disc collapsed in surgery. I've got 6 screws, 2 rods, and 2 Cages now in my back and I'm only 26. I just wanna say that I'm still not healed and it's been a miserable recovery! My pain never went away and it's now progressively getting worse. I found out that the nerves in my legs never healed at all and I've got permanent nerve damage. I never had any problems with my legs before surgery. I've got constant back pain and constant pain in my legs. My advice is to try and keep your head up and stay positive! Everyone heals differently and not every case is the same. Negativity will only cause more pain and stress and it can really bring you down. Walk. That's a big help with strengthening your legs and building those muscles back up. Lots of leg stretching will help too. I wish I had been able to stretch my legs more. I've lost all the muscle in my legs because of how severe the pain was and it caused me to immobilize myself. I'm still waiting for a miracle to happen here but I'm starting to become more active because I'm keeping my head up. Eat healthy foods. That will help strengthen your body. I hope you have a speedy recovery and I pray that any problems that may be trying to manifest in you will disappear. We are both young so our bodies are suppose to bounce back a lil faster. Good luck with your recovery and may you be blessed in everything you do

Wow, i am sure all the posts i read, you all must have good insurance. I am unfortunately on state health care. Over 3 years ago i rode on a county fair ride with my husband. The next day when I awoke i was completely unable to move. I was rushed to the hospital where all they did was prescribe me Percocet. Shortly after I found out I was pregnant with my son. Unfortunately for me I carry my children close to my spine, so my pregnancy was very painful. No doctor would listen. After I gave birth, I was finally given an mri; I lost my insurance immediately after. Since i have been pregnant twice more, I lost my last baby at 20 weeks. I believe it was a blessing because by that time I could barely walk, lost 2 jobs. All due to my difficulty moving. Still no doctor would listen. The pain got so bad after my third epidural (I think something went wrong) that I went to a pain management clinic. A month ago I finally found out that the mri I had years prior, showed I have a blown L 5. However I have had 2 pregnancies since and I know there is more damage. I can barely function, and they can't even prescribe an adequate amount of pain meds so that i can function. I have been up for about 2 days now, because of the pain coursing down my right leg. I can barely take care of my two toddlers let alone any of the other many things I am responsible for. Still no doctor will help or listen. I am at my wits end in the pain department. It has gotten to the point, where I am nauseous all the time and can barely eat. Let alone all my duties as a mom. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions would be nice.

In 1984 I was injured on the job when I was run into by a forklift and pushed into a massive wooden standup desk. resulting injuries were shattered right hip, pelvis had multiple fractures and several vertebrae were damaged. I was treated with traction for several months and the result was no healing of the pelvis. I had surgery to repair the pelvis with an external fixation. That was successful but the pain in my back was severe. I was told for three and a half years that the pain was refereed from my hip. I was then sent to a .Dr. who did a double discectomy in aug of '87. I was able to maintain until Sept of 2001 when I had a disc rupture and I fell on my back on some stairs re-injuring my lower back. I am being treated by the VA and was told that my problem is inoperable, Treatment is Morphine. A couple of weeks ago I was sitting on the edge of my bed and lifted my leg to put on pants when it was like I was hit in the lower back with an electric sledgehammer. I am now wondering if I may have had another disc rupture. Is there anything I might be able to do?

The pain which is being discussed here I know all to well...sadly...I have recently learned , the reason for the continued pain EVEN AFTER surgery is the over looking, the lack of knowledge + the failure on doctors behalf to address the issue of the PIRIFORMIS MUSCLE that raps around the sciatica nerve...causing a lot of grief + pain...LOOK IT UP ,RESEARCH IT.. I'm sure you'll agree..then immediately bring it to your Doctors attention... GOD SPEED & GOD BLESS
