I was in South America when doctors daignosed a bleeding ulcer. Emergency surgery stopped bleeding and doctors performed a truncal vagotomy and pyloropasty. EPO and IV iron dextran were given. However, the doctors had never administered IV iron before. So, after I stablelized at hemoglobin of 6 g/dl, doctors decided that if normal dose was helpful, larger dose will be more helpful. Doctors decided to administer remaining vials, five times FDA approved dosage! This resulted in extreme lower back pain and joint pain resulting in staying in hospital for an additional week. My question is what will be long term effect of IV iron overload. What tests or procedures should I now consider?
