I am so glad to find this post! I had my thyroid removed a year and a half ago and have landed in the hospital about 5 times since then. The first time was for 9 days with extremely low calcium, magnesium and potassium. Once they got it under control orally, I then started experiencing shortness of breath and wheezing. I've been in the ER about 3 times so far with it as well I am allergist who says it is not asthma. I landed back at the hospital tonight and now they are finally making me an appointment with a pulmonolgist. I was hoping all of this wasn't related, but now after reading all of these posts it definitely seems related to having my thyroid removed. I just wish there were answers! I'm so tired of complaining and being at the doctor all the time! It makes me feel helpless and I'm not one who likes to feel that way! I have two children so I go on with life as normal as possible and put that smile on my face while the whole time being so tired, I pray they don't notice. I'm praying that everyone finds the answers they need soon!!!

I am 36 years old, I had a total thyroidectomy and radiation treatment over 2 years ago. Since the surgery I have gained over 100 lbs. I have shortness of breath, throat swelling, a whistling sound sometimes when I breath and have a lot of phlegm when I wake up. One of the most annoying things I have noticed is my air seems to escape (like a heavy quick exhale) at random times. I have trouble sleeping and stay exhausted all the time. I have seen multiple doctors to no avail they all say my levels are fine and tell me my weight gain is odd and should not be related to the thyroidectomy.
I like everyone else here am still seeking answers. I hope someone finds some kind of encouraging news that will help us.

I'm 6 months post op for TT. ( follicular variant of Papillary cancer ) No RAI- tumor less than 1 cm- Getting 6 month ultrasound tomorrow. Surgery was a breeze, discharged the next morning. I too had pain/tightness in my left upper chest last for about 6 weeks and then it went away. Still have a weak voice and cannot hit any high notes or yell too loud. Have had tickle and constant urge to clear my throat since the surgery. Doc's say its normal....Going to Ent soon if this does not clear up. On Synthroid 1.37 X 7 days. Gained 4Lbs in 6months a little low on energy. That's My two cents.

Hello I am having the same issue. I had my thyroid removed almost 2 years ago. I am having tightness in chest and trouble breathing. I have a cough that won't go away. I have told Dr's and they are sending me to get an x-ray. Not sure what's wrong with me. Never had any health issues before this and this respiratory issue is not okay. I don't smoke and I feel like I have worse lungs than my smoking husband. Let me know what your outcome is. God Bless you!!

Yes. I still have the same issues 4 years after my thyroidectomy. I feel like a senior citizen! I'm 47 now. I also still have to take 1260 MCG of calcium every day.My synthroid hasn't been decreased yet, but will be in November. I dread it! I also take cytomel along with the Synththroid.

I have the same symptoms. I had my thyroid removed in 2014 I am 53 years old. Never had any health problems. Since the surgery I have had several problems. I feel like I've been deceived about what happens after the surgery. I feel like my airway is closing and the doctors say "Oh your fine" but, I'm not HELP ANYONE

Hi there! Ive read your post and I am going through the exact same thing! Right after my surgery I was scared to sleep because it felt like I was going to stop breathing. I even called the hospital the evening I was released from the hospital to make sure everything is ok. A year from now I still feel the same thing. Ive been told its anxiety but the same feeling after surgery is anxiety? How did your appointment go with your pulmonary specialist. I know your post was about a year ago but I hope this gets through to you.
Thanks, Diana from Guam
