I've had a mild asthma for years, but after about 6 months of taking Yaz, my asthma got worse, with no other obvious reasons. My lung capacity is still fine, but I'm a runner, so my doctor said it's normal. I nad a NIOX test, when they check the air that I exhale, and it showed airway inflammation, which is asthma. So even if your lung capacity is within normal, that doesn't mean you don't have asthma.

Other than that, in 1.5 years of taking Yaz I went from the edge of being hyperthyroid to hypothyroid, and also developed a rare for my age autoimmune disease. I don't want to blame it all on Yaz, but can't help but think it's all connected.

Hi All. I actually have been on beyaz which is the same as yaz but with folate and have been experiencing the same thing. I was googling and came across this. After only being on it for 4 days I felt like i had asthma while working out. I work out 6 days a week and train with a trainer with intense cardio and have never had a problem like this. I felt like I just couldn't get any air in, i was breathing but nothing was happening. Yesterday was my 11th day and last day on it after going to the doctor, they immediately wanted me to stop taking it. I worked out today and experienced the same problem. Couldn't get any air in after about 1/2 hour and even if i took it slow, it kept happening. I am hoping once the beyaz is out of my system I go back to normal.

I googled shortnes of breath and Yaz because I am a healthy 49 year old who started taking Yaz 9 months ago for menopausal symptoms.  Anyway, I walk everyday on hills for a half hour but in the last few months I am embarrassed at how out of breath I get.  I just had an EKG and echo of the heart since my mom has a heart problem and this is a symptom.  But my heart was great, in fact they couldn't get my heart rate up high enough to validate the test since I was in such good shape; but I was breathing hard.  I guess I'll stop taking Yaz, which is a bummer because I liked having regular cycles since I'm in that stage of life; but I guess breathing is more important.  Strange that a drug could cause shortness of breath.  I hope I remember to come back and tell you all if my breathing gets better when I stop the Yaz.

My dermatologist recommended that I start taking YAZ in order to help with my acne. I have been on Yaz now for about two years. My acne disappeared but I have experienced horrible breathing problems that sometimes get so bad I cant even walk up a flight of stairs. I have always been a runner and exercised my entire life. When I started having these problems I immediately went to my general practitioner, OBGYN, and pulmonary doctor. All three doctors dismissed the notion that Yaz could be the problem and recommended that I begin using an inhaler to help with my "asthma". Although I had never experienced asthma before I believed my doctors and continued taking Yaz for two years. I recently began trying to exercise again and got so frustrated that I starting researching into the side effects of Yaz and came across this blog. I can not believe that other people have the same symptoms as me. This breathing issue has literally ruined my life to the point where I can barely do any physical activity without getting tired and out of breath. I revisited my OBGYN last week to discuss these breathing side effects of Yaz AGAIN. She told me that my "asthma" problems were definitely not from Yaz and that she had never had any other patient mention having these symptoms from being on this pill. It is so frustrating to not have definite answers about my health but I think when it comes down to it you have to listen to your body and do whats right for you. I stopped taking the pill earlier in the week after I finished my pack. I immediately began breaking out again which is something that I haven't experienced in almost two years since I began the pill. My breathing on the other hand has already improved a lot. I can not believe that I let myself think that I had asthma this whole time. I have been to numerous doctor appointments in the last two years and never did one of my doctors mention Yaz could be the problem. In most cases my doctors insisted that Yaz was not the problem and that I had just developed adult asthma. I am writing this blog because I think that it is important for people to recognize that this breathing/chest pain from Yaz is a REAL side effect. Like I said before I am twenty four years old, eat very healthy, and always exercised a ton before this Yaz incident. Yaz worked great for my acne and I barely ever had a period while on it which was great. I also had virtually no PMS which was previously a huge problem for me. I also previously struggled with cramps and never had one single cramp while on Yaz. There are many good things about Yaz but none of the benefits are worth the hell I have been through with my breathing problems. Although I was prescribed an inhaler it never helped or worked for me. I had all the lung tests and chest xrays that they could possibly do and everything came back looking great. Does anyone have a suggestion of a pill that does not have these crazy side effects. I obviously need some source of birth control and am not looking forward to breaking out like I did before. When I read the reviews on the other pills they all seem to come with horror stories. Does anyone have a suggestion besides staying away from these crazy drugs?

Holllllly c**p!! This is nuts! I have been having breathing problems for almost a year now! Have done all kinds of asthma tests and they wanted to do heart tests next.. but I have no money for that mess! I am on Yaz too. I actually didnt take my pills last month bc my perscription ran up and I didnt get to the doctor in time... the breathing problems went away. Started taking them again.. the breathing problems are back! That's when I realized that it might have to do with my birth control. Then I came accross these posts! No more yaz for me! It's enough to make you go crazy!

When I was 16 I started I the birth control pill LEVLIN shortly after I experienced shortness of breath and was having trouble with any physical exercise as I felt I wasn't getting enough oxygen into my body and that was very stressful on me and my body. Multiple times i was taken into hospital where doctors would just brus off as a teenage girl having a panic attack. For two years I have been in and out of doctors, hospitals and specialists having blood tests, stress tests, asthma tests, lung scaas and ultra sounds. Eventual the doctors just said they don't know why I'm having such breathing problems and suggest I see a phycartrist as they think I have depression. Both mum and I knew this wasn't the case, 2 years on we looked into alternative holistic doctors. We found a women that actually wanted to listen to what had been going on and was interested in giving me a real answer. It was she who told me to trail going off the pill for a couple of months to see what that effect that would have, it has been 6 weeks since I took my last pill ... I am able to breath again and have my usual 18y/o energy back .  I have been reading all these other post that have been saying its YAZ but I think it goes for birth control pills in general as. Have taken LEVLIN. I hope this helps other lady's experiencing this as I know this is a stressful situation to be in when the most natural thing in the world to do becomes if difficult.

I'm glad I came across this page. It is making really question the pill as I have been having lots of breathing issues for awhile now. Every time I start to run or do lots of exercise I get really short of breath. I might try going off things for awhile now to.

Exact thing happened to me. I started on Yaz and I eventually developed shortness of breath, along with neck and pack pain as well as a tight chest. Breathing became a daily struggle, I couldnt get air down! I thought I developed Asthma and I also got many tests done to look at reasons why I had a shortness of breathe but all came back inconclusive! When I look back, these symptoms did seem to start around the time or a little after I started taking Yaz! I have just gone off Yaz and I am trialling Estelle-35 at the moment. I can already feel a HUGE improvement with my breathing since going off Yaz only after stopping it days ago!

I take Diane 35 and have noticed that I can't seem to take a deep breath.

Diane 35 actually has that effect. here are a few symptoms:
breast pain, tenderness, or swelling
brown, blotchy spots on exposed skin
dizziness
headache
increased or decreased interest in sexual intercourse
nausea
swelling of ankles and feet
unusual tiredness or weakness
vomiting
weight gain or loss

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, then the best thing to do is to go to your doctor and explain the situation. I hope it works out for you!

I've had the exact issue.

Now, my childhood asthma has returned, so It may not be the same boat.

Did you stop taking it? Did it get better?

This is exactly what I have experienced and I have the same history.

I now have my super fun new super asthma under control, but the chest pain is killing me. It is almost constant and coupled with the exhaustion and exacerbated asthma exercise seems impossible.
