I have bilateral Complex Regional Pain disorder. This involves both of my arms, hips, knees and feet as well as the whole of my back. To deal with the pain I use 5mg Norspan patch weekly and 2 x times daily panadeine forte. I have found that with this combination I can function reasonably well. My husband is concerned about possible future side effects on my liver and kidneys. I have tried all sorts of other pain medications and combinations and so far this has been the best result. What are or could be the side effects of longterm use and how best can I manage my health to reduce these? I am a non smoker, non drinker. Thanks

That sounds like a very light doseage to me so if that is working for you go for it. I am using 20mg Norspan and take up to 8 (4x2) Panadeine Forte a day to get some relief from what sounds very similar to your description of pain. Have not heard the name used but does sound the same. I gave up worrying about long term effects as the level of pain was too high to cope with and even now I use a high dose (up to 150mg a day) of Dichlofenac as well when required. I am sure the combination is not good for me but it enables me to function at least some of the time. Your age is also something to consider. If you are in your senior years as I am, (late 50's) then you need to consider quality of life. If you are youngish then you need to weigh up the pros and cons a bit more. Good luck and I hope this is some help to you.

wow that sounds like a very high dose of medications for any on to take, in retrospect of what you believe pain all starts in the receptors of the brain, as you would know norspan is used mainly for cronic pain management. i use 15mg of norspan and 4 panadine forte tablts a day due to a severe car accident this dulls the ain and gives me some quality of life i am very young though and want to stop all medication so attend a pain management course this is a awesome experience and i am slowly learning that i will never be pain free but i can shift the pain from in your face to the side by using my mind please be aware that the mind is a very very powerful thing and if used correctly is capable of almost anything. you may want to give it a try

Hi for the last 2years i have been on a wide selection of drugs such as Durogesic 50mg, Tramodol 2oomg ,plus load smore due to a bad fall. I had weaned myself of alot of them over the time as i did not feel they were appropiate for what was wronge with me, Just recently after 2 years of battling with specialist of all fields, most of them telling me there was nothing wrong with me and a couple wanted to operate. They left me very mixed up and confused which lead to depression as i started getting suicidal because they made me feel there was nothing wronge and it was in my head. The pain was getting worse and i was getting very sick from the medication at one stage i ended up with a stomach bleed. To this day the doc has me on 25mg Norspan, Endone 5mg 2x four times a day and Panadine 2x eight times a day and i can not function i am only very young and have 2 children, they have adapted around me and do alot for themselves. Getting to the point just recently i walked into a professors office and he looked at a recent scan i had of my back. He laid me on a table straight away and done 8 injections up front into the ligaments in my back, a week later he done another 10 and acupuntcure. now today without my doctor as i can not get in to see him, I have weaned myself down to 5mg Norspan, 1x Endone if needed a day and i do not take Panadine. Alot of this is because i have used my mind, like you and it is not easy but it works. The only problem i have now is adapting back into the world, it is scary and i can't explain some of the emotions i have that flood through my body. I still have alot of injections to go and alot of healing to do but i have more hope for my future now. If anyone understands about the feelings after comming of alot of drugs and adapting back to what is normal can you please help me as i am really having difficulty breaking out of the laying around all day and finding things to get up for, this is the only cycle i can't seem to break, anyone know what is wronge with me. thankyou it feels good to get this out.

I have undergone Pain Managment and found it extremely helpful. It helped me come to terms with what i could expect from my life help me realise that the pain was there to stay there would be no magic fix. But it taught me so many different techniques to help cope. and due to that help i was able to reduce my medication alot. i was able to rearrange things in my life that made living easier. so keep pushing and working at getting a better quality of life. And remember if you stumble just get up and start again . it is nothing to be ashamed of we all stumble i have heaps of times but i am still getting up and trying to improve.

I am over 70 and for the past 11 years I have annual multi-level lower spine facet joint denervation as a day patient at a pain clinic.
This gives me a certain degree of pain relief for approx 9-12 months. In addition to this treatment I am on 30 (20+10) Norspan patches  weekly for the past 18-months. I have been on all the other non opiate pain relief medications over 30-odd years as well as regular anti-inflammatory meds. I Really dislike this regimen, but I cannot have a reasonable daily existence without the denervation & medication, all supervised by my GP and Pain Clinic Specialist. I have annual blood tests for liver, kidney functions and other routine tests, so I am very well supervised. Consult your GP and if necessary also seek a referral to a pain clinic for evaluation. Don't be afraid to ask about all the options for chronic pain management.

I have posted a comment below, however, I can add my experience with pain from chronic arthritis in many joints including both knees (severe) & ankles. The most effective pain relief I get is from the use of inflammatory drugs, Voltaren (Dichlofenec) & Movalis 15. I rotate every 3-months between the two. The Movalis has less effect on the gut and is my preferred option and it relieves my knee/ankle pain much more than either Norspan or Tramadol. I also have to take a Proton Pump inhibitor as well to reduce the acid effects on my stomach. I have been a long term user (40-odd year) of various anti-inflammatory drugs, mainly the ones mentioned. Consult your GP regards your options. What works for one does not always work for everyone, but all are worth a trial..

I also take Norspan 10mg... before this i was taking, endone and panadeine forte.  My doctor and pharamacist urged me to start taking the Norspan as it is a much better option than taking all the other pain killers.  It has really worked for me.  I also starte Yoga and meditation and that also has given me much benefit.  I also take Indiocid an anti-inflammotory for break through pain and every day i take Topomax an epilepsy medication for migraines and Resotrans as the muscles in my bowels dont work on their own.  At night i take another Topomax, an Endep which helps with Fibromyalgia and Nexium which is a Proton Pump Inhibitor for all the acid reflux i get.   I get councelling and had come to terms with the fact that i take all this medication and that it helps me be in a reasonably pain free place, yet i still have my days where life is hard.  However i was on holidays and i got sick and i went to the doctors, and he told me tht the Norspan was a very bad drug to be on and that it was going to destroy my pain receptors and the longer i am on it the harder it would be for me to get off it.  He said i should start tapering off this drug immediately and very slowly or else it would cause me long term damage.  i left the doctors in tears.  Now i am in turmoil.  i have once put the patch in the wrong spot as i am a very slim girl and the patch couldnt penetrate through in to my blood stream.. the amount of pain i was in was tremendous.  i could do nothing for the pain.  it was embarassing..i was meditating for hours to no avail... i moved the patch to a meatier spot and after a few days the pain went away and i was back to normal again.  i realise maybe this doctor was right, and i may be very dependant on this patch.  i dont know what to do either... so back to the question of this original post.. effects of long term use???????  any knowledge at all????

Hi I understand about what you are going through. I had a large surgery to my jaw and long gum line. Lack of protection on my mouth after surgery caused a tear which has left me with severe oral and nasal nerve damage. I'm using Panadeine 1 to 2 3 daily and Diazepam 2.5 mgm's x daily. I also have had Hypothyroidism all my life. I work my mind to the limit as the pain never leaves me. Unable to exercise go shopping bur the floors affect me the next day. I have only had minor relief it isn't much fun coping with pain. But I do work on my brain therapy to get me through. Still always difficult to be as active as I was. I loved rock 'n' roll dancing no longer able to do this. No relief for me much. Not a clear diagnosis either. Just nerve damage. Legal prescription medication and mind therapy is what I depend on. Would love to see and end to this misery. Guess we are all in the same book. But we keep on trying.

Hi, I'm only 27 and have just been placed on Norspan 10mg patches. I also take 150mg twice a day of Lyrica, 8 panadol osteo a day, 2 mobic a day and endone as needed. This is all due to spondylilothesis and a bulging disc which has caused severe nerve damage. I'm in constant pain and 1.5yrs ago was told I have arthritis in both hips and would be lucky to make 8-10yrs without hip replacements. I have only been on the norspan patch 3 days and it makes me feel really flat, sick and overall blah. Has any one else experienced this?
