I too believe Singulair is significant in weight gain. I have experienced it also. After stopping this medication I have lost 5 lbs in two and a half weeks. As for your baby, you do not want her to loose weight at her age. She is growing and just maintaining her weight for several months will be best for her. Give her healthy treats and limit the foods with a lot of sugar. I'm sure she will be just fine.

I started taking Singular 5 months ago. Prior to taking Singular I was very fit & slim. People at the gym often prasied me for fitness level. I work out 4 times a week, have a very active job, and I am a vegan. All the sudden I started getting fat. I was becoming very depressed because I couldn't figure out the weight gain. I reduced my caloric intake with no results. (I also trained for fitness competitions, so I know how to eat to loss weight) I kept gaining weight. It suddenly dawned on me that I immediately started to gain weight @ the time I started Singulair. Invested this onlien & found many people who have the same problem. What a relief to find out taht it wasn't me. I will be exploring new options to control my asthma. On a side note many years ago I was on Advair for @ a year and it destroyed my digestive system. I developed all sort of food allergies after taking that. I took me amost 2 yaers after stopping that drug to get back to normal. These asthma drugs are brutal on teh body.

I'm so thankful i found these posts on Singulair and weight gain!! Started using the 10 mg pill at night for bad asthma along with Seretide inhaler twice a day. Have been feeling awful, can't sleep and in 4 days my midsection bloated so badly and gained 1 pound. So decided to quit.  i also feel really bad and nervous. Bye singulair!

This isn't true. I regularly run 50+ miles a week and eat a calorie counted paleo diet and have gained weight on prednisone and singulair. You can gain weight while not over eating.

I have been taking Zyrtec for over 6 months then noticed bloating. I am also very fit and never had that problem. I am a fitness and yoga instructor and I am really into ab work. I stopped zyrtec for 4 days now and I am still bloating. I get reassurance online that it happens to other people, but no one says anything about how long it took to go back to normal. What happened when you stopped? I am getting withdrawal itching and I still g eery bloated.

Came looking online as I too am gaining weight. Feeling stuffed when I eat. Very uncomfortable. Mid-section definitely uncomfortable and feeling and looking fat. Asthma better ... But I am going to try and stop taking the drug and compare benefit to this side effect. I am 59 and cannot be gaining weight. I am at the absolute heaviest I ever need to be ... Too many reasons the weight needs to stay down not go up.

I posted a while back about the bloating. I have done much research. Basically....taking antihistamines blocks your H1 histmines... and if you take it long-term...you have backed up histamine and/or your body wants to produce more to battle the drug. Too much histamine is the underlying problem. The drugs are no good. It is best to go hollistic. There is a way of eating that will help. Go for a low histmine diet. I stopped taking antihistamines 4 weeks ago. I am still not back to normal. The supplement Quercetin is good too.

OMG, I have been telling my doctor about this myself too, and still the answer I get is that I have the psychological background for the nightmares to be occuring! In other words, the doctor says that I am to blame for the particular side effect _ not the medicine!

As for the weight gain, I have had it, too, after having taken singulair for almost a year! Even so, what really worries me is not the weight itself but the fatty liver that came along plus the disappointing liver failure, so as to speak !

What should we do ? I wish asthma would never afflict others!

I had the flu over the holidays and hardly ate anything at all.  And gained weight.  That's what made me start looking at what changes I've made since starting to gain weight.  Singulair is the only one. I actually did a half marathon during the time I was gaining weight, so it's not like I'm not working out.  My eating habits did not change dramatically, but the weight sure has.  I've even gone on a very strict diet this month and haven't lost a pound.  I think I'm going to stop the Singulair and see if I can try something else.

I'm so glad I found this post. I thought I was going crazy. I have been within 5 pounds of the same weight for the last 15 years and all of a sudden I have gained almost 30 pounds in the last 5 months. I looked months ago to see if weight gain was a side effect of singulair, but it isn't listed so I kept taking it. It works well for my asthma, but now the weight gain is actually making me have more discomfort and breathing problems. UGGGHHH!!! Has anyone found a substitute drug that doesn't have this side effect??

This forum is marvellous! It makes you feel like you're not some chunky that can't say no to grazing on the grub. I've been on Singulair for several years now and my weight has rapidly increased.

It's quite upsetting when you know what's causing it, but the Doctor and everyone else thinks  that you're over-reacting or indeed over eating!

My question is, has anyone stopped taking this drug (and if so what was the alternative offered to you and did it work as well)

For all Singulairs faults, it does manage / control asthma and in my personal experience saved my life. So the big question is, is vanity worth more than quality of life the answer would probably be, of course not, but if we can campaign for all 177 reported side effects (found on this forum alone)  then its worth a try.

My 7 year old daughter has been on Singulair (Montelukast) for over 2 years and my family had noticed her weight gain started right at the time of the prescription. She does not overeat and is active, was always energetic but now is tired a lot after sleeping 11 hours a night. Her intermittent asthma has improved a lot and it appears she may have outgrown it. Next pediatrician appt I may just suggest stopping medication.

I am a marathon runner that turned 40 last year.I have been taking Singulair for a year. I have gained about 8 pounds since being on the medication. I have been eating very healthy and have added weight lifting to my exercise routine. I thought my extra pound of cellulite was from turning 40, but now I'm thinking it's the meds.

I was off Singulair for a year because of another problem, so I started it again about a month and a half ago, and lo and behold, I gained 5 pounds!!! I had been the same weight for the last year or so and suddenly I gained 5 pounds after I restarted Singulair. My diet was a lot lighter than before, and I hard eat anything but it does not matter, I weight kept going up!!! I noticed my hands were puffy and I was achy all over, my joints were painful. Anyway, I thought the pain was due to my arthritis so I ignored that, but when the pounds kept going up I decided to take myself off the Singulair 3 days ago. Guess what? My puffiness on my hands went away and my pain is lessened, AND so far I have lost 1 pound! I will take that!!! I should have known that Singulair was never for me. It used to cause palpitations that was why I took myself off it in the first place. I better stay away from it from now on!
