Hi all,
I thought I would post here on the off chance someone reading this has the same thing I had.
In October 2017, I caught a viral infection which I didn't end up shaking. Past the acute stage i.e. fever, bad cough, fluey stuff etc. which lasted for a couple of weeks, the lymph nodes in my neck remained swollen, I frequently felt nauseous and dizzy, and I felt mentally and physically exhausted even with 10+ hours of sleep a day. Being an avid cyclist, I went from training 6 days a week, on top of gym work, to the low point where I was struggling to make it up a flight of stairs without wanting to keel over. Before I got sick, I was training hard with the hope of qualifying for the Comm Games, so this transition was quite difficult. After realising that this wasn’t going to go away anytime soon, I had numerous blood tests (and repeats of blood tests) of everything under the sun (cat scratch, mono etc.) which all came back negative. I also tried two different types of antibiotics. Eventually my GP(s) ended up saying it was likely to be post-viral fatigue and left it at that. As my glands were still up (at this point for 2 1/2 months) and I still felt generally unwell with no real sign of improvement, I got a referral to see a general physician a few weeks later. Unfortunately, after a pretty thorough examination, he found nothing. *I should also mention that although I had this going on, I was still picking up colds, so while I was waiting to see him I saw a naturopath who gave me a load of supplements to support my immune and adrenal system. Unfortunately, this didn’t seem to help me.

Feeling quite desperate, I asked to be referred to an ENT specialist as I noticed a bit of pressure in my sinuses. After a bad bout of tonsillitis four years ago I used to get tonsil stones every now and then, so I thought it would be worth a try. After a brief check he didn't seem overly concerned, but he recommended I get them out anyway, just in case. After the tonsillectomy, he informed me that my tonsils were chronically infected to the point where there was a lot of scarring, debris, my tonsils were full of infected tonsil stones etc. and there was no doubt that they would have been affecting my health. He also mentioned that he removed some adenoid tissue at the same time. It is now three weeks and one day post-surgery and I am incredibly unfit but I am so unbelievably happy to say that I am finally healthy and myself again. This whole process has taken over 4 months and there were so many awful moments where I thought that at the ripe age of 20, this was going to be something I would have to deal with for the rest of my life.

I would really like to emphasise that I am no way trying to trivialise cases where people have CFS, undergone treatments and suffered significantly more than me for a significantly longer period of time. In my case, I really cannot stress enough that I don't believe I would have gotten any better if my tonsils had not been removed. So if you have any doubt about your tonsils or adenoids, push for their removal because particularly in public health they will be incredibly reluctant and will most likely tell you “just to keep an eye on them.” I really hope that this is able to help someone. Do not give up until you find your answers and don’t ever think that this is all in your head. You know your body better than anyone.

Best of luck.

Has anyone checked your parathyroid? Vitamin D, vitamin b12, blood calcium levels? Have you found a diagnosis or just tossed aside with a "syndrome" that makes all your symptoms in a group but doesn't tell you the root cause?
