Hi, guys. My friend has been suffering from lupus rash for some period of time. However, it seems that she has developed some systemic manifestations of the disease. She has so called “butterfly rash” on her face. I have heard that this form of rash is common for people with systemic lupus erythematosus. Can someone tell me some more info about this? I would really appreciate it.

Lupus eythematosus is a systemic disease. It is an autoimmune disease. It means that immune cells do not recognize its own cells and attack it. It can happen in kidneys, joints, lungs and skin. Skin is usually affected. Your friend can have “only” discoid lupus. It means that only skin is affected, but not organs. In any case, a proper treatment must be done. I hope this will help. Good luck!
