My daugther is nearly 14 and has been on her period for 12 days now. She has been extremely heavy to the point it pours from her especially when she gets up in the morning. She leaks quite a bit which is difficult for her when out with friends. Even now on her 12th day she is heavy. The doctor precribed her with Mefenamic Acid capsules to help make them lighter but she suffered with the side effects of headaches. I am looking to take her back to the doctors but concerned that she will only prescribe the pill. Any suggestions.

He may let her go a few more months to see if this heavy flow is a pattern. But i think that he will eventually reccommend that she go on the pill. Her periods will even themselves out and become easier for her to manage.
Remind her that just because she is on birth control, this is not a green light to start having sex.

Hello
Welcome her to Adult hood at this early age, but she is still a girl at heart right now. This is not to out in left field, but it is ok for a teens at 14 or so to be placed on the pill, and more should be, this is the start and best time of the school year for all of her close friends to "join in".
The benifits are greater then the side effects
1) She will start her responsiblity for your own health & well being, & be monitored by you
2) Stop the long and heavy bleeding shen is now having,&maybe for sometime to come
3) Know closely when she will have her next period
4) Given a entry in to adulthood as she has now no other choice in this matter.
I think she will not need to complain about larger breasts as this is one of the minor side effects.New clothes for her - LOL
I read on here that other 14 to 17 yo not having any periods, small breasts and other complaints of not being a teen.
Tell her how your teen years were with onset and same problems different years for all girls. Your teachings to her, will pay off and see how well they were recieved, as BBfeet9 quote is "Remind her that just because she is on birth control, this is not a green light to start having intercouse, she is too young to grasp the effects and concept of intercouse.
