I have been seeing a pain management doctor for quite some time now post-op as well for a current non-surgical issue. I have 4 ruptured discs in my neck and a ruptured disc in my lower back with a disc tear. I have never taken anything other than what I have been prescribed (legal or otherwise for those who wonder) and I don't abuse what I am prescribed. On the last urine screen I was told I tested positive for hydrocodone (I'm on oxycodone) and we figured it was a mistake and set up a new screen. Later I realized I was given a prescription cough syrup (Tussionex) which did in fact have hydrocodone in it. Mystery solved, other than I didn't think to tell my doc about it BEFORE hand. So long story short the new screen came back and did show positive for hydrocodone. Here is the "but"...I was told my number was too high. So my questions are what is a normal number and why would my number be considered too high considering I took only the reccomended dosage? Granted the dose was taken within 8 hours of my screening, but by no means did it exceed the reccomended dose. My doc said that it is quite possible that other medications I am taking could very well slow down how I had metabolized it and now wants me to see a specialist for further testing. While I am sure this is the required steps that need to be taken given the fact I am being prescribed narcotics, I feel as if I am being looked at in a negative lightnever though my only mistake was failing to tell my doc about the cough syrup. I don't abuse medication but I feel as if I am being looked upon as if I did. I don't know enough about the levels to research it, but i do know in a past screening one of the medications I am on wouldn't even show up if i was taking the name brand but did show if i was on the generic for that visit. There is always rooom for error, human or otherwise, but arguing about it would have gotten me nowhere. So I am wondering if anyone ever expierenced something like this? My meds are Oxycodone, Soma, Nucynta, Gabapentin (for pain), Adderal XR (for ADD) Lexapro (for anxiety) Nexium (acid reflux), Ambien (to sleep) and Claritin D for allergies...I know, it's pathetic and I hate it. I am trying to hold out for a spine transplant ;) So taking the hydrocodone in the cough syrup would have been the first time in years that I have had that specific drug in my system. Would any of these meds cause it to be metabolized slower? If not what would cause something I took so little of (reccomended dosage) to show as a "high level"? Thank you in advance!
