Hello, my mother is 53 years old and she entered menopause recently. We have e history of heart problems in our family and she contributed to it with smoking and bad eating habits. She has those heart problems now and takes medications for it, which include diuretics too. I have heard that those are not easy meds, so I would like to know which metabolic problems can the use of diuretics cause?

Diuretics are meds that eliminate excessive fluids form our organism via kidneys but they also affect the levels of electrolytes in the body. They increase the excretion of kalium and that is not something that should be taken lightly. It might cause some metabolic problems, such as hypokaliemia, which might lead to some more heart issues. And that is not what your mother needs; I am guessing she will have to take some additional meds for compensating that loss.
