Hey guys,

Just yesterday I talked with a friend of mine about infective endocarditis. Apparently, our mutual friend got it and we were discussing how can a person possibly get infective endocarditis. We were afraid because of its name that we might have gotten it from him but I doubt that would be possible.

Anyway, I wanted to ask you if you know how can somebody get infective endocarditis and what causes it. We got no clue about this and we are really curious to know, he is our colleague, we might have been exposed to the same thing that caused this to him.

Hey Stradivarius,

Well, endocarditis is an infection of the inner lining of your heart.

Endocarditis occurs when germs enter your bloodstream, travel to your heart and attach to abnormal heart valves or damaged heart tissue. Bacteria cause most cases, but fungi or other microorganisms also may be responsible.

Sometimes the culprit is one of many common bacteria that live in your mouth, throat, or other parts of your body. The offending organism may enter your bloodstream through everyday oral activities like brushing your teeth or chewing food, especially if your teeth and gums aren't healthy, an infection or other medical condition, catheters or needles and certain dental procedures.

Hey Stradivarius,

Infective endocarditis is an infection that can seriously damage your heart valves and cause other serious complications if it isn't treated quickly with antibiotics. Surgery is often needed in order to repair or replace damaged valves. If you and your friend think that you have this infection or if you feel that you have any symptoms, you should talk to your doctor as soon as possible. The earlier this condition is diagnosed and treated, the better the likely outcome.

If you don't have any medical history regarding heart diseases, you can obtain this only by getting bacteria inside your bloodstream.

Hey guys,

Like they told you already, Stradivarius, you usually get this when bacteria enters your bloodstream. However, in rare occasions, it can be caused by infection with fungi.

Most bacteria that get in the bloodstream are killed by the immune system but sometimes some bacteria survive. They may then settle on a heart valve (particularly if the valve has already been damaged in some way), or on another section of the tissue that lines the inside of the heart chambers. Once a small focus of infection develops in the heart chambers it is very difficult for the immune system to clear it out.

Hey Stradivarius,

If you or your friend think that either one of you guys have this infection as well, you need to go and talk to your doctor because this can cause some serious complications, it could even lead to heart failure. It is easily treated so don't waste your time thinking about whether or not do you have it, go and talk to your doctor and a simple blood test will show you whether or not do you have this infection.

When it comes to passing this infection from one person to another, it is possible, by drinking from someone's glass, for example.

Good day there.

I think that someone can get it pretty easy. Certain bacteria normally live in our body. They live in the mouth and upper respiratory system, intestinal and urinary tract and even in our skin. It is very easy for bacteria to get in the bloodstream and this is called bacteremia.

Those are the bacteria’s that can settle on abnormal heart valves or other damaged heart tissue. In the case if that happens they can damage or even destroy the heart valves.

This can result after certain surgical and dental procedures as well.

Good day there.

Infective endocarditis is a very serious condition that requires a medical treatment. If you let it untreated the infection can literally destroy your heart by damaging your heart valves. This can lead to so many problems such as stroke, damage, heart failure and even the death. This condition is very rare in people with healthy hearts, so they don’t need to be scared. People who have other heart conditions are at the higher risk. There is a huge possibility that you will need to take some antibiotics before some medical or dental procedure if you are in the higher risk for the infection. You need to be careful.

I think that everyone already told you how you can get it and what is the main cause of it.

But also it is very important to know the best way of the treatment for it (because it is necessary). Infective endocarditis is treated usually with antibiotics for several weeks but you may also need a heart surgery to repair or even to replace heart valves or remove infected heart tissue.

People who are treated with proper antibiotics usually recover very soon from it. But like you already know, if infection is not treated it can be fatal.

Remember that.

Hey. It can be very serious condition. It is like many other conditions that needs to be treated. With proper medications, with proper therapy and good way of lifestyle you can prevent it. Infective endocarditis is a form of endocarditis and it is an inflammation of the inner tissues of the heart. It is caused by infectious agents which are usually bacterial, but you should know that some other organisms can be responsible as well. Remember that if you let it untreated it is usually fatal. You need to consult your doctor as soon as you feel some symptoms.

Good luck.

Hi there everyone. This bacteria attacked my daughter a few years ago. This bacteria just entered in her blood and she started to feel very weird she had a lot of different symptoms and we went to see our doctor immediately. She got this during some dental procedure and we still don't know how this happened. I believe that this infection started to damaging her heart but luckily we reacted very soon and she got proper treatment. Now she is OK, but she is still using the medications for her heart. I just want to let you know that you should not play with it. Good luck.
