Hey,

I have pcos (polycystic ovarian syndrome) I have been having my period for five months minus two weeks. I hurt a lot in my back and stomach. I can't seem to quit bleeding and I don't know really what is going on. I haven't gone to the doctor for this because I am still bleeding. Is there anything I can do to stop the bleeding and, why is this happening. I am not currently sexually active and haven't been for a long time.

Well, the menstruation can usually be regulated with a contraceptive pill, though the effects are caused by substituted hormones that can easily cause more problems if the pill is taken for a long period of time. Where polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with overweight or obesity, successful weight loss is probably the most effective method of restoring normal ovulation/menstruation, but many women find it very difficult to achieve and sustain significant weight loss. Low-carbohydrate diets and sustained regular exercise may help. Some experts recommend a low GI diet in which a significant part of total carbohydrates are obtained from fruit, vegetables and whole grain sources. Other treatment options include: hormone treatment, diabetes drugs, Vaniqa cream (eflornithine), clomifene, surgery. You should discuss all these options with your gynecologist.
