For 8 years I have worked in a laboratory - always on my feet, constantly moving, with less than 20 minutes per day spent sitting. Also, I maintained my weight (5ft nothing, 100 nothing). Never in that entire 8 years have I ever had any sort of joint pain or problems. Recently, I changed positions and now my workday is entirely sedentary. The result of that has been a 15 pound weight gain.
In October of this past year at home one evening walking around, I got a sudden, sharp, stabbing pain in the ball of my foot. It was so bad I couldn't walk, I sat down and took my sock off to look, and the entire joint was swollen and red, and my big toe was pointing off to one side like I had a bunion. Well, I've never had a bunion, and I had just given myself a pedicure a few days before and not noticed anything out of the ordinary. The joint was so red and so tender, I thought maybe I had been bitten by something, but I coudn't find a bite mark. I limped for a few days, wore flip-flops, and eventually it got better (swelling and redness subsided), but it never completley stopped hurting.
And now it's January - the joint has ached or just basically been annoying whenever I try to wear heels this whole time. So I figured, well, I've just got a bad bunion I'm going to have to deal with it. Well, I think I forgot just how bad it hurt the first time! Today it's swollen and red again and OH SO TENDER! And on top of that, the "ball" of the knuckle of my ring finger is swollen and ON FIRE also!
So do I have gout??? I mean, I'm female, I'm only 30, I'm not obese by any stretch of the imagination, and yes, I have been alot less active than I'm used to...but I don't eat large amounts of meat or fish or the high purine foods. Not any more than any normal person would, anyway. And, yes, I do partake in an occasional beer or glass of wine, but not everyday.
I am VERY fair-comlected, red-haired, and blue-eyed. I have very bad skin allergies and I tend to have reactions to drugs that other people wouldn't have. My great-grandfather was a full-blooded Cherokee (I read Native Americans are more likely to get gout) although I obviously got the Irish phenotype.
I'm going to make an appointment for the doctor tomorrow. Is he going to laugh at me if I ask for a Gout test?
