I am going for surgery this monday, and I am so scared!  I have read the stories and almost all of them are horrible!  Could someone please give me some tips on things to do to recover better.  I have three children and gotta get well quick!  I got a heating pad for my ears,  got all soft food, plenty drinks,  know to get tons of rest and take the pain meds!   Anything else to help please let me know!

Hi there

I'm also 32 and am now 14 days post op.  For me the experience wasn't too bad compared to the rest on this forum but I am still taking some pain meds now as all my scabs still haven't fallen off yet.    Water, it seems, is the key to healing.  Ice cold water really soothed my throat so that was a bonus for me.  A heating pad for you ears sounds like a good plan - I didn't think to get one so I just rested my ears on my hands for most of the time.  Days 3-7 were the worst for me but the pain wasn't horrendous for me but rather a niggly pain that just wouldn't go away.

For me, eating wasn't so bad.  Here in the UK we're encouraged to return to our normal diet asap so I'm not sure if that helps the healing process but most of the time I couldn't face eating things as my throat was soo swollen I could handle small portions.  It would take me about an hour to eat a sandwich!!

I've also noticed that my taste has become a little skewed.  Sweet things taste a bit dull now but I'm hoping this will wear off soon as I love my food!

All in all I think it's wise to mentally prepare for the worst so hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Good luck and let us know how it goes!!

Hello!
I'm 15, and just got my tonsils out 6 days ago..
Well I Will Say Now, It's Not That Bad, I Imagined Feeling Like I Was Going To Die, It Was Never THAT Bad, But I Also Will Admit There Were 2 Days That I Wanted To Just Scream..

The Day Of The Surgery It Wasn't Bad At All, I Was A Little 'Woozy' But That Was Because The Gas They Gave Me To Knock Me Out. I Came Home With A Prescription For Percocet In Pill Form, And Vicodin In Liquid For. That Day I Curled Up In Bed And Slept Until I Had To Take The Next Dose Of Medicine.

Day Two Was Not The Best Day Of My Life, All I Wanted To Do Was Sleep, And That's Pretty Much What I Did, I Stopped My Meds This Day Because It Hurt To Swallow Anything, So I Was Pretty Bad Off, Also By This Time I Had Only Drank About A Cup Of Water Since The Surgery.

Day Three, This Was My Worst Day! I Actually Went Back To My Throat Doctor Because I Was In So Much Pain, I Couldn't Swallow. When I Laid Down I Couldn't Breath Because I Had Such Thick Nasty Slime In My Mouth.. All My Doctor Said Was Drink More Water And Get The Spray That Numbs Your Throat. Well The Spray Is Nasty Tasting And It Didn't Suit Well With Me, So This Day I Just Toughed It Out And Made Myself Sleep.

Day Four, This Was When Everything Got Slightly Better! I Was Able To Take My Meds, And I Drank A Lot Of Water And Gatorade, Still Had Slime In My Mouth And My Breath Wasn't The Best (Brushing Your Teeth Is Really Not Comfy). I Still Slept Alot This Day, But I Wasn't In Such Bad Pain.

Day Five. I Hadn't Eaten One Thing In Five Days, My Stomach Was 'Yelling' At Me About That, And This Is When The Ear Pain Kicked In, It Was Pretty Bad, But I Managed To Take Some Percocet (Broken In 4 Pieces) And I Was Doing Ok, I Made Sure To Drink Alot And Also Spitting The Slime Out Into Tissue Makes Swallow Liquids Alot Easier. Day Five I Actually Managed To Do Stuff, But Nothing Really Difficult..

Day Six/Today. I Haven't Talked, Or Eaten Anything Since The Day Of Surgery, Talking Is Very Painful! I've Gotten The Case Of Coughs A Couple Of Times Today, And It's Really Painful If I Try To Hold It In, So Much Better If You Just Let It Out! Your Breath Will Be A Bit Nasty, I Even Brushed My Teeth A Couple Of Times But It Does No Good! The Ear Pain Comes And Goes, And It Only Hurts Sometimes To Swallow, But If You Keep Your Throat Moist It Will Most Def Help!

So Since The Surgery I've Learned Alot! Make Sure You Drink Alot Of Water (It Doesn't Have To Be Freezing Cold) Or Gatorade (It Has Alot Of Electrolytes You Need) Because Getting Dehydrated Is Really Bad, Plus The Pain Of Your Dry Throat Isn't Fun. Make Sure You Have Someone To Help You Out For The First Three Days Or So, The First Two You Will Not Want To Do Anything!
You Will Most Likely Drool While You Sleep, Just To Warn You..

Like I Said Earlier, I Haven't Eaten Anything Except A Cup Of Apple Sauce And A Little Bit Of Pudding, I Haven't Really Been Hungry And The Doctor Said This Is Ok As Long As I'm Staying Hydrated! An Upside To This Is I've Lost A Few Pounds Since The Surgery! :)

Well I Really Hope This Helps You, And Don't Scare Yourself By Reading All Of The Horror Stories, It's Not As Bad As You Would Expect! Just Anchor Down And Hang In There It Will Be Over In A Few Day!
I Hope All Is Well, And You Have A Speedy Recovery!
