But what I *don't* know is what to expect when I get to the hospital. Will I have to be intubated? Will I have a catheter? How long does the surgery take and how long will I be in recovery at the hospital? My procedure is supposed to be outpatient.
ANY advice is appreciated!

I can tell you since I was in the same situation 5 months ago. The doctor will put you under the anesthesia and after a surgery, you will wake up. You will be ok and you will realize - OK, tonsils and adenoids removed - what to do? First, until you are still under the anesthesia, you won't feel anything. And then, the pain will start to happen to you. You can expect really bad pain. Also, you won't be able to eat almost anything. Forget about your favorite foods such as hamburgers or pizza - it will wait. Also, forget about your daily and ordinary activities until you are fully better from this surgery. When it comes to recovery days, they usually last for 15 to 20 days. With antibiotics and doctors instructions, you will be much better. Don't be scared, it is just temporarily. Good luck.

Best advice I can give, drink water constantly. When my throat would dry out is when I had the most pain. Drinking a little water then trying to swallow food worked better for me.
Throat pain was horrible in moments but the ear pain is what I didn't expect to be so bad. Putting a heating pad on my ears seemed to help a little bit with managing it.
Good luck.

Went to hospital, checked in, signed a few papers
Went to prep room, put on hospital gown, had to go pee in a cup
Went back to room, got my IV, hung out for a while
Anesthesiologist came in, talked to him, signed more papers, got relaxing medicine in my IV, it burned a little going in but only for a minute
Went to operating room, got on operating table, anesthesiologist put medicine in my IV to knock me out, nurses had me breathe O2 in through a mask, I passed out
~~While under, they put a tube in my lungs thru my mouth. They have to to keep oxygen in your lungs because when you are knocked out you cant really breathe right...plus it keeps blood from going in your lungs while you are under. The operation took about 20 minutes. They take the tube out while you are still out of it. You are like 1/2 awake and 1/2 asleep, awake enough that you dont aspirate, but asleep enough that 10 minutes later you dont remember it, and so you dont have your gag-reflex.
I was in phase 1 recovery for an hour to an hour and a half...I had some problems coughing up blood and crying (its more common for girls to cry coming out of anesthesia than guys..dunno why)...
Went to phase 2 recovery where my boyfriend was waiting. I was in there for like 45 minutes. I puked up some blood that had settled into my stomach, but I felt a lot better after...in phase 2 they gave me a dose of my medicine.
After that we went home. The only time since I've been home that I got sick was my first dose of medicine...I still had some blood in my tummy that I needed to get out...but getting sick opened a wound and I bled a bit but ice water stopped it right away.

First day is easy, you'll probably think "this is gonna be a sinch", same iwth day 2...but days 3-6 just progressively get worse with each passing day, esp the ear pain (at least for me). Today, day 7 for me, has been good. The mucus is getting thinner, scabs are starting to fall off, I can swallow...
Just make sure you have someone with you the first day or two, non-stop...and the rest of the recovery make sure you have someone that you can call on if you need, but they dont need to be sitting by your side the whole time...be prepared to be BORED...rent movies, try to sleep as much as you can.
Drink drink drink water. doesnt matter if you breath thru your mouth or nose it will dry your throat out and that HURTS. mornings have been the worst for me because i dont drink water all night...but the more you drink the better you'll feel.
i havent been able to eat jello or pudding or anything....all ive been able to eat is ramen with like 1/2 of the seasoning packet...i cut it into little rice-size pieces so i dont have to chew. sweet stuff tastes gross to me.
dont psych yourself out by reading the horror stories...its not a cake-walk..it is pretty miserable but it's do-able, esp. if its something you need. follow doctors orders, stay hydrated, try not to take meds on an empty stomach...you'll be ok.

out. the little children size my age, older, or smaller up to 10. i was afraid when i heard the news. i wanted to look at the hospitals and see what kind of history they had. but my mom stopped me. you should get over it, i did.
it all started when i first woke up. i woke up at 9 o'clock. but , i dicided to test myself. i took a nap at 1'oclock. this is without the sleeping gas. i woke up 2 full hours after i needed to so im saying youll be able to sleep though it
but dont put off thev sleeping gas helps you not wake up during the operation.
But when you wake up its all done and your throat hurts but, you get to choose any kind of icecream you want. they push you out on a wheelchair, and you head home. you shound eat mushy things and drink alot of ice cold water. also you should have some one stayed with you the whole day. you should also sit on your side. DONT GET UP. it will be boring so watch tv, rent movies , and sleep alot. you shouldnt get up unless you have to go to the bathroom. girls get ready to cry because its more girl that come out crying the boys and the bad part is im a girl so cry with me your not the only one. ive had people doctors, and nurses considering that my mom is one. so dont cry or back away it will help you out alot. i hope my advice helped.

The first day I just remember every time I had to swallow I felt as if my ears were going to burst from the pain , it was awful. I just remember waking up in the hospital with the most horrific sore throat. I was pretty out of it because they gave me a shot fot the pain and than tylenol w cod. wich knocked me out. I came home and slept for about four hours straight waking up every now and then from the pain and sipping on water.
Second day, felt the same.... quit taking the liquid lortab pain med they gave me, made me feel too goofy. Crushed up motrin 800 and have been taking them faithfully every 5 hours(can't wait the six you are suppose to wait in between). Also taking antibiotic and steroids.
By day four my throat felt a little better but the pain began in my head and neck. They must have really did a number on my head during surgery.
Anyways to sum it up, alot more painful than I thought especially in the ears also. I can not eat anything except soup. First couple days sip on ice water and suck on ice chips. Chicken broth feels good but now I am sick of it. Use a heating pad on my ears and put on back of head, that really helps!
Here I am on day six. feel better but over did it and am really tired now. Bes advise.......take your medicine on time!!! REST REST REST.....and when you feel better REST more, don't over do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Luck!!!

I was sh**ting myself. But its nothing really to worry about?
I was starving i was in hospital and all i wanted was a steak sandwich or a huge chicken fillet with sauce. I had icecream and ice, then i asked for biscuits and sat and nibbled on biscuits. IT does hurt to eat, but you need to. I couldnt not eat, and im not a huge eater? Lemonade i found helped, it tingled in your throat but it was good, really helped. I got straight into all my food, i couldnt eat soft things, dont smoke!! im a smoker, and firs thing i did was have a smoke, it didnt hurt, but just quit LOL Other wise, going bcak to work on day 6 make sure i take my tablets and get some sleep. And hopefully the white scabs will fall off soon, there discusting. ANd you get bad breath for a few days. It was random. Just SLEEP eat and drink and take your medication. and the ear ache's you get i dont have anything to say about them? I just put up with them and try to fall back asleep.
Getting your tonsils out is easy as 1 2 3 ;-) Just gotta take the right steps after it xxxx
