As a medical doctor, may I suggest a remedy:

First off, drop all medicines ( in case of antihistamines, you will have withdrawal symptoms for about 2 weeks, but follow through with it!) and then do the following:

1. if it's winter, take Vitamin D supplements ( eg 5 drops of Oleovit D3 per day), if it's summer take a lower does of  supplements ( eg 2 drops of Oleovit D3 per day) AND expose your entire body to the sun (without sunscreen because it blocks the effect)

2. Eat basic food like melons, watermelons, parsley, lemons; and avoid acidic food ( most fruits)

3. Also check your Vit B12 levels and supplement if low, or simply eat lots of beans.

I myself had terrible urticaria for over a year, and concomitant neurodermitis. Both disappeared when I brought my vit D levels up to the upper limit of normal. My goal is to bring it up to 1.5 X upper limit of normal. HOWEVER, I try to do it the natural way, by sunbathing rather than using exclusively supplements. I believe that the skin needs DIRECT sunlight for the cells' metabolism to witch to a healthy mode!

Try it, it is safe, cheap and works wonders!

It really sucks you can't put emails on here. I would really like to know if a doctor has found a cure for any of you. I have had angioedema for 4 years now. It started with allergic symptoms of itching and tingling of my mouth and skin. But as it progressed i got hives on the skin then later coming from the tissue. I get them every where. face, arms, neck, stomach, legs, hands, feet, scalp etc. I noticed if I put pressure on parts of my body it will trigger it to swell. A few times while putting pressure on a knife to peel potatoes my hand swelled, also mowing the grass my hands swelled and my feet from pressing the brake over and over. I haven't had the hives as severe lately, or i've just became immune to them. I also do not have insurance. Since I paid out of pocket, it is considered a preexisting condition so when i get insurance this month i have to wait a year before i can get all the blood work i need done in the lab. But the way i see it if i've went 4 years whats another year, atleast i know by this time next year i can have all the testing i need to figure out this horrible problem. Also it tends to be worse in the summer months and winter months.

Thanks. I have tried the vitamin D supplements. I'll try the beans. So far I've tried B complex's, the Magnesium sets me off.

I do avoid fruit now actually. I find it makes it a lot worse.

I just came across your comments, Im 45 and have been suffering from unknown idiopatic angioedema swelling since I was 32 years old.Personally, I tried everything and anything. Ive learned alot about this disease. After reading up on how this condition works, i decided to take matters into my own hands. Before january of this year 2012, I was getting uncontrolable swelling every week, sometimes twice or sometime every other week, Rest and benydryl only make it worse....I started taking vitamin k, b complex, iron, multi's  and bilingual b12 (these supplements all work on thickning your blood. After 1 month my episodes went down alot. Afterwards, I heard of of tranexemic acid or (Lestida) woman take it to slow down there period. I started taking two a week for 4 weeks and now take two 650mg when at the beginging of an occasional flare up. It realy is working for me. I am finaly living a normal life. I hardly get swellings and when i do they are minor and tolerable swelling. I hope this is helpful for you cause i know what your all going through. You can email me for now at

I have found the same to work for me; a glass or 2 of wine and a Benadryl or 2. I never even thought that it was helping to the thinning o the blood but that makes PERFECT sense !
I am having all the tests done to check my thyroid levels because that is what I believe to be my problem...I was 50 years old when I had my first attack (4 weeks ago) and I've had 10 attacks since =/
My first one was the worse....so maybe I'll not ever have as serious attack as the first one, like you.

I would, if I were you, when you get insurance, have your blood tested for HAE.... and BEFORE that, go to a community clinic and see if you can't get a script for an Epi pen since we just never know with this stupid DZ if our throat could swell !!!

I also suffered from angioedema and lived on zyrtec for a miserable year in which no doctor could help me. Most angioedema, as you all know by know, is from "unknown" sources!

After searching online, finally, one day I came upon one line in one article that stuck out for me. There is a bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori which comes from unclean utensils, foods, etc.. It is easy to pick up and, apparently, over half the world has it, usually without any symptoms. It affects only some of us - and hives and angioedema are two of the symptoms.

The author prescribed a natural tree substance which comes in a capsule form called Mastic Gum. Mastic Gum kills helicobacter pylori. It can be found in health food stores, Whole Foods, Sprouts, etc. and costs about $40 for a months supply. You take 2 every morning on an empty stomach. I took mine for 2 months...but I was cured within a couple of weeks. And I mean completely cured! (Mastic gum also is a known cure for ulcers...which are usually accompanied by H. Pylori.)

I sincerely hope this helps someone here as it helped me.

Best to you all. (This is the tree!)

I have had angioedema since I was 15, which started a week or two before my psoriasis started. I have read about lips swelling and your throat closing but I have never had that. My scalp starts to tingle, alerting me that its starting, and within 5 minutes I am red all over and my skin is severely burning and itching. My skin is hot and it feels like im standing in front of a fire. This lasts for about an hour or so now and only happens at night before I got to sleep. Sometimes it has happened if I wake up in the middle of the night. This morning it happened after dawn, which is unusual. Also, I am immune to antihistamines and so the doctor put me on Plaquinil, an immuno-modulatory drug. The angioedema seems to get worse when I am sick or my immune system is down. I can't figure out what is triggering it. The closest I have found is that when I scratch at my scalp or if I had a skin injury, I tend to break out more. My psoriasis is controlled by a medicated shampoo so I don't scratch as much. It does not cause whelps on my skin so I figured I had the angioedema part of my Chronic Uticaria diagnosis. The doctors have only seen pictures since I don't break out during the day. What exactly can cause it to flare? It can't be the sheets or bug bites. Also my skin allergy test can out messed up so I had to have the blood test. It showed no allergies but I do have an enormous allergy to pollen and dust that didn't show.

I find straight alcohol helps mine too. Like you said just enough to thin the blood. Too much dehydrates and makes my sinuses swell. It can't be wine, beer or a mixed drink. Has to be plain. I can do vodka and cranberry. Can't do a glass of cranberry otherwise.
