I wrote you above. One of the nurses at the ER mentioned her friend who does drink too much only has swelling when she doesn't drink.

I've had chronic idiopathic angioedema for 12 years now. It's so frustrating. Mine hits while I'm sleeping too. Immunologist wanted me to use plasma treatment & I refused because it's super expensive. My husband did research & asked Dr. If I can try tranexamic acid. She gave in & rx me the med. it's works will & so long as I take it I won't swell. I just worry there's something underlying as I read about lymphoproliferative diseases & the big symptom is angioedema. I'm an identical twin & she's never had angioedema. I feel like a mystery case.

I've had this alongside urticaria for best part of 8 months with only 2 big flare ups on my face and countless wheals where IDE imagine most glands are I.e behind knees, outside of armpit, waistline...
I have obviously done my bit of research like you guys have and found quite a few possibilities:
- adrenal fatigue
- Candida albicans
- over exertion
- tiredness and stress
- neurological reaction to other medication
- immune system disorders

I too have been tested, more specifically for allergies in general which is negative and also anything hereditary... Negative, thus leaving everyone baffled.
They only seem to be interested in medicating the symptoms and not the actual cause which is what we are all looking for so desperately.
After my most recent flare up today, it got me thinking that it may be a combo of all the above I mentioned and worth detoxing from yeast products, stress, coming off medication (anti depressants/ anti histamines) and making sure not to over exert. I only think this because they all point towards the immune system fighting off what it thinks is a threat thus presenting to us as a swelling. In addition to that I found that the swellings would get way bigger if I was asleep which makes me think even more so towards immune system. We as humans love to heel & recover when we sleep don't we? Could this be the immune system trying to protect us against what we feel is nothing when all it really is, is an intollerance to a food?
This is the first post I've done on this and I am actually really happy to find so many other people explain this condition so similar to how I would.
If you find out any other possible symptoms/ diseases/ conditions feel free to copy the list above and add to it.

Hi all,

Same old story with me. Started as urticaria a couple of years ago that would present as an itchy burning rash on my wrist. Progressed to facial swelling accompanied by a giant hive, usually on my bicep. Recently had extreme facial swelling and giant hives all over my body after a long haul flight.

Allergists have tested me for everything under the sun but have come up empty. My GP's advice was to let it burn itself out and most people are usually affected for 3-5 years. He also noted that about half a dozen of his patients are currently dealing with urticaria and angioedema.

For me, the key to dealing with the symptoms has been fexofenadine morning and night, and healthy eating and exercise. I watched a doco called "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" about a couple of guys dealing with urticaria who cleaned up their diets and lost weight, and found it largely alleviated the symptoms. Maybe they are onto something?

Like everyone else here alcohol seems to make an episode worse or trigger it, and the swelling often comes on at night and I wake up looking like i have had a shot of Botox in my top lip haha.

Good luck everyone!

I am also a sufferer from the dreaded A-E. The only thing I have tried that helps so far is alcohol. My thinking is that rather than thinning the blood, it triggers the creation of cortisol which suppresses the body's inflammatory response (managed by the complementary immune system). I suspect the linkage between stress and A-E operates on similar lines, with chronic stress boosting cortisol levels, causing the complementary immune system to ramp up. When the stress is temporarily relieved, the cortisol levels drop, releasing suppression on the complementary immune system leading to an increased inflammatory response (basically letting minor things kick it off) and bingo - A-E. This fits with the night time on set - with cortisol levels being lowest at night. Given this whole thing is so dynamic I am not surprised it's hard to treat. Perhaps a cortisol tablet on detection of onset - tends to be a weird itch for me might help - hard to manage this when you are asleep though!
