The constant headaches are really bad. Even my GP thinks the surgery was a failure. What to do now. I have no feeling in my left hand, half my left arm, constant pain lower neck, and I can't swallow properly and the headaches are blinding.

I just had a anterior cervical discectomy and fusion at c4-5 and c5-6. I have issue's swallowing since the surgery. I was sent to an ENT and he said I had acid. Never had problem with acid until now then. I told him I really didn't think it was acid but he is sure it is. I was taking 2 prilosec for a month and contact my primary doctor and she said the prilosac isn't doing anything and to stop taking it and gave me a diff pill. I also talked her into get me in for the test to see if it is acid. Our director of sales at work has a friend that had this surgery and he is a doctor and he had the same surgery as I did and is also having issue's swallowing. He told her that it is very common after this type of surgery and the only way to correct it is another surgery.

i am three weeks out from 4 level neck fusion. neck is doing great but i have a hard time swallowing any solid food and my voice sounds terrible. I was never told that this throat problem might happen. Very disappointed and wonder if it will ever get better. I am losing pounds every week and have no appetite because it is too painful to eat anything now. Will it get better in time? Please let me know if this is normal for neck operation.

Hello everyone,
I too had an anterior cervical fusion discectomy with 2 plates and a cage of c5, 6 and 7 this was all done a year ago the past June. However, I have a right paralyzed vocal cord, and open airway 24/7 and just found out I have spina bifiida from s1 to s4 awaiting a visit to the neurologist to find out the extent of that. Prior to my surgery I never had any pain in my right arm I do now, it burns and when it burns it lasts for minutes or even hours, my hand cramps up, my arm shakes and I still get headaches and can't turn my head too fast without getting dizzy. I'm not sure with the spina bifida if I should have even gotten the fusion done in my cervical because it seems to cause me a whole world of problems. I have since been diagnosed with sleep apnea I stop breathing in dream state sleep 4 to 6 times an hour, and I have a piece of skin in the back of my throat, I don't know if I should talk to an attorney or if this is normal the burning in my arm didn't start till about 5 or 6 months ago. My spna bifida causes me a lot of lower back pain, to the point where I hurts to move, bend or walk any advice?:

Hi, I had ACF of C3,4,5,6 in 2007. Glad I had it but I still have problems swallowing food. The only things I have found so far is many doctors have said the same thing. The hardware is pressing against your throat and causing this. Their recommendation was to eat slower, chew lots more, and follow every swallow with liquid. And this I found myself. Don't turn your head when you try and swallow. LOL as stupid as that sounds it helps. And I start to hiccup if it doesn't go down. Sorry I know that doesn't help much but its a lot better then the pain I was in.

DuPey told me that is caused because of the metal, They said that is why the inserts say that after the fusion the plates need to be removed. It is a foreign material and the body fights it. The doctors will say different so I had DuPey send me the insert.

I am stunned to see so many people out there with the same thing I am experiencing. I had C5-6 ACF 3 months ago. The feeling of the lump in my throat seems to be worse now than it was earlier in the recovery process. I have no idea what to do. I read about a study online that said most people have improvement after 12 months. I know some of you have been dealing with it alot longer than that, but I hope that there are some people out there who can tell me that they improved within a year.

This is terrible. I hope that you find some answers. I will send positive thoughts your way. I have trouble swallowing and feel a terrible lump in my throat, but your issue makes me reminded that it could be much worse. Prayers for healing
