After 3 (different childrern) epidurals and the last one in 2010 was like some of the other posts, they stuck me in the back 4 or 5 times and I actually felt the needle hit my spine o.O. I thought I was gonna die, and now I'm pregnant with my 4th and having severe lower back/ spinal pain. Its like someone is stabbing me in the back. Now I am in the process of looking for a good neurologist because I am convinced that there is some kind of nerve damage and of course many doctors including my Obgyn think that I over exaggerating the pain and pretty much is trying to chalk it up to round ligament pain. But I will hopefully soon get some answers, If you have lower back pain after an epidural you need to consult with a neurologist and get the answers that your doc isnt giving you.

I had my son 10 yrs ago. I had two deliveries before and decided I didn't want the pain again so I went with the epidural. I had to wait quite some time to get it because the anesthesiologist was very busy. Once I finally got it, everything went fine with administering and insertion and I was in heaven. They had to tell me when to push because I couldn't feel it. It helped to be focused on the pushing instead of the pain. They left the epidural in almost all day, and I knew that was a bad thing when I saw the look on the nurses face that realized it!!
I knew something was wrong when I got home with my son and when I first bent over to change his diaper, I had a very difficult time standing back up. It was like I had to force myself to stand and then it was a hunched position. Now 10 yrs later, at the age of 44, If I walk for some time and then sit for a while and then get up, I am walking in that familiar hunched position. This has been going on for at least 6 yrs. and I guess the condition has been getting progressively worse since the delivery.
Anyone else noticing pain in their feet after walking? This has just started in the past 5 or so years but it's becoming a constant daily nuisance.

Has anyone ever considered that their back pain may be due to the labor itself?  Maybe prolonged pushing with your knees forced up by your ears has something to do with it. Or perhaps walking around for the entire third trimester with an arch in your back as the baby gets bigger and bigger. I've had an epidural for fibroid surgery and had absolutely no problems.  I have two children, and six years later, I began to have back pain.  I did not have an epidural for either delivery.  I can confidently say that the epidural that I had two years prior to my delivery had nothing to do with the sometimes burning and debilitating pain that I now have across my lower back.  I think that epidurals are beneficial in those who need them, and I find it conflicting that only women who have had epidurals for labor seem to blame them for back symptoms.  I know of people who have had epidurals for other procedures like lung and abdominal surgery.  I have not yet read of complaints from these patients regarding back symptoms.

I had an epidural 18 years ago while having my second daughter, I am 40 now. Since then, my lower back goes out about once a month or so, and will stay out for about a week at a time. It is a sharp pain deep within my lower back right where I received the epidural, and it feels like a muscle "slips" and then pushes on a nerve. That's the best way I know how to explain it. It seems to "go back in place" after about a week, until it slips again a month or 2 later. When my back is out, I can sit and lay with no pain whatsoever, but when I stand or lift something, I have to be very careful. Sometimes the pain is way worse than other times. When I feel my back starting to go out, I have to hurry and  stand strait up, and then bend over forward  to stretch the muscle  as far as I can or I will be in bed for a week. This affects my job as a CNA because I lift heavy people every day. I am constantly on lifting restrictions because of it and will eventually have to give up my job. I am very relieved to read that I am not the only one, and that I was right the whole time in thinking this was caused by the epidural!

I forgot to add in my post above- I have only been a CNA for 3 years, so my back pain is not caused by lifting people :) I will be going  into another profession very soon because of the risk of hurting myself, or someone else!

I had two kids previously without epidural and had no back pain. My labor with my son (with the epidural) was quick and over within two hours. No back pain before having the epidural, but plenty after.

I have been suffering for 10 years due to the epidural given during labor. I'm now in need of neurosurgery. I'm looking for women who have had the epidural, whether they feel that they were affected negatively or not. find me on facebook elissa eggen.

Hi rrankin,
I had the epidural 10 years ago and have experienced exactly what you described. I am now disabled and facing neurosurgery. The affects of the epidural which are published to the common person are invalid and I am setting out to prove that. I'm looking for people who have had the epidural to start some research on the topic.

I am positive that the epidural had a very negative effect on my spine. I had my first two children naturally with absolutely no back pain. I have always been very fit and I know my body. I have NEVER had back pain prior to the day I allowed the anesthesiologist tamper with my spinal chord. My back pain started immediately after the anesthesia wore off from the epidural  with the birth of my 3rd child. That was 10 years ago. The pain has always been isolated to where the epidural was administered and has been worsening to the point where I am disabled. I recently had an MRI after I entered the emergency room unable to walk or stand without collapsing pain. You can clearly see the discoloration on the vertebrate above and below where the epidural was administered. Doctors do not believe that my pain has ANYTHING to do with the epidural. I have been seeing a chiropractor with absolutely no relief. Now, I have now been advised to have neurosurgery. The statistics on the effects of the epidural are invalid and I am setting out to prove it. Please contact me via facebook if you would like to help me in this  endeavor. Elissa Eggen

Alfredia,

Not everyone suffers from effects of the epidural. You're one of the lucky ones, I suppose. Pain going ACROSS your lower back is not typically indicative of spine pain, but more likely muscle strain. You can read my statement Elissa Eggen

I've had a similar experience. You need to get an MRI. It only gets worse. I'm now facing neurosurgery and can hardly walk. contact me via Facebook if you would like to be involved in my efforts to help women to get through this. I've had to fight and fight to get what I need. Elissa Eggen
