My grandmother is using kava in form of tea, and sometimes in capsules for several years now. She herself expressed a desire to try it out after a cruise to the Pacific island of Fiji. She is very careful and methodic, i.e. she does not consume alcohol and does not use kava on everyday basis but still, I am wondering are kava supplements safe?

There were a few reported cases of kava side effects involving the liver, but you should know that kava is not pharmacologically addictive. Its main ingredients are kavalactones. While kava has been considered relatively safe, some kava herbal supplements may contain pipermethystine from aerial stem peelings which may contribute to rare but sever hepatotoxic reactions to kava.
