Recently I have been on a trip to Rio and had sex with a woman that I suspect might have AIDS. Ever since I returned from the voyage a week ago I have fever, sore throat, my muscles hurt and I have problems with my stomach. During the intercourse I used a condom and there was also some oral sex without protection. I read somewhere in the papers a long time ago about ARS and its symptoms, to me these symptoms that I'm experiencing feel much like ARS. Could it be that I'm infected with HIV? Is there a way to test whether or not I'm suffering form ARS?

Your sexual behavior is very risky, but since you say you used a condom the risk is reduced to minimum even if the person you had sex with was indeed HIV positive. As to ARS and its symptoms: yes, you might be right about that, those are typical symptoms of ARS but symptoms don’t mean much, they can be a sign of many different diseases. You say that you returned from the trip a week ago, usually symptoms of Acute Retroviral Syndrome do not develop until 2 – 4 weeks after initial infection, so your symptoms don’t have to be caused by ARS. In any case if you don’t get better in the next 2 – 3 weeks you should talk to your doctor about further treatment and later you should test to see if you are HIV positive.
