no. you'd have no idea.
i'm betting depressed people have no idea how far gone they truly are.
Sin duda.
One need only look at some of the more horrific events in recent history. I'm sure that everyone can name an event. Things such as drowning your children...going on a murderous rampage in a high school...any of those kinds of things.
If these people realized that they were, um, in need of psychiatric help, would they have taken that step? Doubtful.
And it needn't be just those suffering from depression. No, indeed. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

couldn't you argue that those people *did* take a step in getting help? i mean really, if you really really want to kill someone, and then you do... i'd say that's a step. either you feel better after or you don't. if you don't, lets hope it's not "rinse and repeat" and that they go back to the drawing board or couch.

I think that the posed question implied that the step to be taken (to turn oneself in for psychiatric observation) was for a positive result. If you really, really want to kill someone, and then do so, the step you've taken isn't a positive one. For my money, that's a step taken backward. Besides, that's not a step taken for psychiatric observation. To be sure, if you do such a thing, you're going to be tested, checked, by psychiatrists and/or psychologists. But, by your example, that would be considered putting the cart before the horse. Too little, too late?

Too little, too late? sometimes the only way of knowing if you're gonna feel better about something is if you go out and do it... is it putting the cart before the horse, or grabbing the horse by the b*lls? :hysteria: :hysteria: (ignoring that a psychotic person would actually want to get better instead of just giving in to psychosis...)

See, now what if you had bouts of irrationality and then you return to normalcy and think, "wow... that was truly crazy. I think I should commit myself..."

exactly - what are the odds of you feeling bad after? you're either dead or HEAVILY sedated (and option 2 isn't that far off from being in the white room either way)... it's selfish, but effective.

See, now what if you had bouts of irrationality and then you return to normalcy and think, "wow... that was truly crazy. I think I should commit myself..."

i've had some pretty messed up thoughts, dreams, etc. i'm not worried about it because at the end of the day i know i won't actually carry through on anything that comprises what i've worked hard for. although anarchy *is* nipping at my heels. but the thought of burning down a walmart is really only held off by the inconvenience it would cause to all the workers, patrons, and the dangers to fire fighters. ynoimsayin'?

now if i was an emotional wreck, i might want to get checked out. depression isn't cool.

but being crazy isn't quite the same. :|

my actual answer to all of this is that i'm not sure if i'd know when i'd need help or not if i needed it... although sometimes i think i might need conselling it almost feels like i'm just being lazy - if you're disciplined (ie. don't give in to everything you feel) then that's probably half the battle.

for psychiatric observation? Just curious.
Whn I'm going to hurt myself or someone else. Or when an obsession gets out of hand.

I'd turn myself into green Jell-o with pears if I knew the magic words.
