I know that recognizing the signs and symptoms of asthma is very important part of managing asthma. Since I have got son, and husband’s family is full of asthmatic cousins, I want to know more about it. I have heard that early warning signs or mild symptoms are occurring is helpful. Then treatment and other interventions might begin early. Because of all this, I need to hear more about first symptoms of asthma.

You can expect early warning signs before asthma episodes start. That can help starting early treatment because these clues occur before actual asthma symptoms. I have to say that those signs are unique to each person. Sometimes, early warning symptoms may be the same, similar or entirely different with each episode. Some of them might be recognized only by the individual. Others, early warning symptoms are more likely to be noticed by other persons. Some examples of early symptoms are breathing changes, sneezing, moodiness, headache, runny and stuffy nose, coughing, and chin or throat itches. Also I have to mention feeling tired, dark circles under eyes, trouble with sleeping, poor tolerance for exercise and downward trend in peak flow number. Those are just some of them, but there are more symptoms that you might notice. Wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest indicates that asthma episode is occurring.

I have the same problem. My name is Lilli Wren and I am only 10. I go to Westward Grammar and I am terrified. Last week I was playing football with a couple of boys and suddenly I couldn't breathe and I lay on the grass and tried to scream but I passed out. After I woke up from fainting, I found myself in the libary and everyone was staring at me. It kept happening but all of the other times I didn't faint(luckily!). My school nurse thinks that I have athsma. Please help me, I'm scared. I'm only 10 and I'm really worried because I keep having serious attacks. Help, please.
From Lilli Wren.

I know how you feel. I am 15 and am experienceing almost exactly the same things. Probably the best thing you can do is to go to the doctor about it, after all i thought i was just unfit and ended up in A&E having a serious asthma attack before i found out.

One of the easiest was to determin if you are having an asthma attack is, when you run up the stairs etc and you feel tired, are you having trouble breathing? If so then is it hard to breathe in or out? If out is the answer i would strongly recomend going to a doctor as it if likley that you have asthma.

I've been having a hard time breathing lately. and I have random chest pains and I can't breath. I've gone to 4 different doctors and they all said I'm perfectly healthy. I'm scared cuz I used to be able to play a whole game of soccer without stopping. but a couple months ago I was playing and about 20 mins into the game I couldn't breath and fainted. any clue what it is our what I should do?

I'm 11, and I have athsma. My dad isn't wealthy, so he can't do much about it. But, I wanna do something about it! I wanna start a group that will help kids that have athsma, and are scared about it! I wanna make a difference! I will research about athsma, and find a doctor who will help me help a lot of people with fears of athsma! So if you have athsma, pretty soon you will find help, because I will try to find a way to help others, and I wont stop until I find a way, even if my fingers bleed! :-D

Hello :-) I notice there are alot of young people in here worried about athsma. First off, if you are having problems breathing, feeling any pain, or in any way think you may have athsma tell a parent and get to the doctor right away. Some days you may be able to control it with out medication but at some point you are going to end up in the emergency room because of an athsma attack.

BUT that being said, athsma can be taken care of pretty easy with the right medications. Inhailors, nebulizers, pills....There are MANY different things that you can do to help control it. Your doctor can work with you to find the perfect combination.

So please talk to your parents and get to the doctor. To the girl who says her father isn't wealthy so he can't do much about it..Yes..he can. Even if it is by taking you to the ER and having them give you treatments there, while you are there your father can ask for athsma medicine and have it bills onto the hospital bill. That will give you a months supply of medication right there without having to pay for it at that second. But also if your father will get medical insurance then you can go to the doctor and get prescriptions for fairly cheap.

I am 22 yrs old and live with athsma. I'll admit..Its not fun and sometimes it's painful but when I take my medications like I am supposed to I rarely have problems. Really, the only time I do have problems with it is when I have a cold. Then my athsma acts up. I normally just go straight to the hospital (it isn't scary and its not because im fixing to die or anything) get a breathing treatment and a pack of steriods and it fixes me right up. Then I don't have another breathing problem for MONTHS. I had extremely bad athsma when I was young. And really bad allergies to. I was allergic to everything and would blow up like a balloon if I even looked at dairy products but now milk is my FAVORIRE drink. So don't worry..just because you have athsma now does not mean it will always affect you. And PLEASE don't be scared guys. Its perfectly ok but do take it seriously and let your parent's know that you need to be seen by a doctor.

im 18 and only until today i thought id never suffer from the likes of asthma. It was only 2 days ago from today where i lay in a hospital bed, that i noticed a change in the way i felt.Morning number one,i am awoken to the pains and throbbing of a sore throat. As the day persists i continuosly suck on cough sweets, begging the pain would stop in an instant.Morning number two, thankfully the sore throat had gone! However then came along a cough. This cough worsened and worsened and it got to the point i was borking,as a result of coughing too hard.My chest began to feel asif someone was squeezing me with all their force.Breathing now became painful and almost impossible.I attempted to climb a few stairs. Each step became a mountain. After two steps i just knew i wouldnt make it.I was phsically drained.I cried and cried not knowing what was happening.I finally got my mum to relise it was much more than a flue i was suffering from. One phone call later i was sat in a taxi,on the way to the emergency doctors.I visited the doctor n he called for an ambulance straight away.He knew straight away what the problem could be.ASTHMA.
During my first evening at hospital doctors took xrays N loads more.they came up with loads of scenarios.Blood clot in lung, lung collapsed, viral infection. But little did they know.....

? I'm also wondering if I have athsma. I'm 16, and my whole life I've never had any serious attacks. However, I often have moments where I unconciously stop breathing, I don't realize it until my chest starts to hurt, and then I have to struggle (painfully) to breathe again.

Actually, I have had one episode like an attack. When I was seven, I was sitting outside at night in humid Hawaii and suddenly I couldn't breathe at all. I gasped and choked but couldn't take in any air for a good five minutes. It's never happened again.

Athsma is in my family history- my grandfather has a very serious case. I've been able to play games and sports like cross country, but I'm not any good, and I often feel like I can hardly breathe while running. My whole life people have pointed out how red my face gets after any athletic activity. I'm a skinny, pretty fast (good at track, not much endurance) teenager who gets a normal amount of excercise. People even say I have an athletic physique, so I kind of doubt that my body (besides my lungs) is the problem.

I wonder, do I just have poor endurance and erratic breathing? Or is this like a minor form of athsma? ?

I hope the best for everyone on this thread! I'm amazed at all the people younger than me who are so scared- yet also so hopeful and brave. Please keep pushing on, I also have many little health problems and I understand how hard it is. My heart is with you guys!
