Babesiosis is a rare illness that is caused by a parasite that lives in some ticks. Symptoms of this illness include fever, chills, sweating, weakness, tiredness, poor appetite and headache. However, some people with the illness may not have any symptoms. In some cases, the illness quickly becomes serious, and it can even cause death. Babesiosis can affect people of all ages, but mostly people in their 40s or 50s. A doctor will need to do blood tests to see if you have this illness and he may also do blood tests to look for other infections that ticks can carry. Treatment of this condition usually includes two antibiotics. You should tell your doctor right away if you develop shortness of breath or any other symptoms after you start taking the antibiotics. Some people who have babesiosis need to go to a hospital in order to be treated.
