Hello! Is there anybody who could tell me a little bit about Babeiosis. My best friend was on holiday, down by the coast, and she got infected with this disease. What or who transmits this disease? Is it serious? Thx in advance!

Your frind was really lucky that she was diagnosed with this disease so fast. Babesia infections are difficult to track due to the number of asymptomatic infections. She was bit by one of these two ticks: Deer Tick or Blacklegged Tick who were infected with the parasites from the genus Babesia. Do diagnose this disease thick & thin blood smears and serologic tests are performed. Babesia parasites are single-celled organisms invade red blood cells and may cause fatigue, aches, fever, chills, sweating, dark urine, enlarged spleen, or anemia. Infections can range from no serious symptoms to fatal disease. Existing treatments are anti-malarial drugs, Quinine, and antibiotics (Clindamycin).
