My sister's baby, who is still in the womb, was just diagnosed with a severe skull defect called anencephaly. What does this mean and does her baby have any chance of surviving? This is a difficult time for all of us, mainly for my sister and her husband of course, and I would like to help her in any way I can.

Unfortunately the prognosis for anencephaly babies is not good. Most don't survive gestation and those that due usually die within hours/days of birth simply because of the absence of a large portion of the brain and skull
