Doctor,
I am a type 1 diabetic and have been for the last 9 years, type II for 5 years previously. Last week after bottoming out < 40 and drinking 20 ounces of OJ I was pull over by the police and given a field administered breathilizer. To my discovery I blew a .04 ppm and this was followed by me explaining to the officer that I had not consumed any alchol that year and his test may be incorrect. Is there such a thing as when a person "bottoms-out" and then rapidily increases his blood sugar that there is a "blood alchol reaction" that would cause this officer field test to register a figure? Please advise, for I'm a little confused. If there is such a thing is there been any papers written?
Thank you,
Jim Hetherington

Hi James, it could just be that the officers breathalyser had not be callibrated correctly. Following a hypo I am not aware of any reaction that would cause an alcohol reading to be present in your blood, if insure then it may be worth speaking to your specialist next time you have a check up, until then just be careful about maintaining your bm levels and try to keep some glucose tablets handy to prevent your levels becoming so low. Hope this helps.
