My doctors believe I got c-dif from a visit to the hospital. I was sick, then got sicker. I was also pregnant. They finally figured out I had c-dif but it was a little too late. It had gotten in my blood stream, from being untreated, and almost killed me. I only lived through it because I am only 24 and otherwise healthy. I was on life support for a total of 5 weeks, spent 69 days in the hospital. Beat the infection only too get it again a week before going home. I had to have an emergency c-section at 31 weeks before the infection got to the baby. I"ve been home 5 weeks and I still have the infection. I wouldn't wish this infection on my worst enemy. It is very contagious so be careful around people who have it, it CAN be deadly...I almost died twice from it.

My Father went into hospital with a fractured hip eight weeks ago, since then further complications have arisen and he has been diagnosed with the c-diff virus twice. The hospital had given my mother his clothing to wash without telling her that the virus was present. when she took the clothes home she found his faeces on them. why is this happening, surely his clothes should be incinerated while the virus is present. There doesn't seem to be too much vigilance present regarding hygienic disposal and constant reinfection and i am appalled, as are all my family, at the state of my father who was coherent and semi mobile when he was first admitted to hospital and has now been reduced to a shadow of his former self.

There is a non-antibiotic drug that is in Phase III trials. It goes by the name of Tolevamer and is manufactured by Genzyme Corporation HQ'd out of Cambridge, MA. www.genzyme.com

The info on G's website states that they are currently fast tracked with the FDA and expecting approval in 2007. Not sure when/if they will actually get it early/late '07. My experience with the FDA's approval process is that they don't tend to ACTUALLY make their own deadlines.

Just something to hope for. Feel better.

I have been diagnosed with C diff after a 20 day course of antibiotics following multiple other courses of AB for a resistant sinus infection. I am now on Flagyl which has seemed to help and am eating activa yougart which has also helped, I guess. my diareha has lessened, severe abdominal pain is gone after 5 days but I fear that the worst is yet to come. I can feel my intestines just below my rib cage, they feel ike little nodules and are a little tender. I have never felt this on myself before. My Dr says its just inflamation but I fear she may be overlooking something as they feel more pronounced now then a couple of days ago and I am worried because I have not lost a pound in the week and a half that I have been Very sick. I am awaiting the stool culture results but my blood work all came back normal.

any thoughts?

C dif is very contagious under certain circumstances for those of you who have asked. I am in nursing school and know that you have to be in "contact isolation" when you have it. Meaning, the nurse must be in gloves and gown b/c if they come in contact with feces contaminated with cdif, they can get it. It's not airborne or anything of that nature. But it is contagious. If you have even reminants on your clothes, you can give it to someone. People who's immune system is compromised are at even greater risk (the reason many people get cdif when they're in the hospital). So basically, if you have cdif, you should go to a hospital to get better because it is contagious. Just because you don't have visible feces on your clothes, you should still consider yourself contagious to those who touch you!!

I forgot to mention, if you are around someone with Cdif, wash your hands with SOAP AND WATER!! In the hospital, there are usually containers of alcohol-based hand sanitizer but it WILL NOT destroy the virus!! Anything that can be contaminated with the Cdif needs to be thoroughly washed, though that does not always kill the virus. Again, washing hands with soap and water will significantly decrease your chances of contracting Cdif. Make sure that if you are near someone that is suspected of having Cdif, DO NOT touch around your mouth after you have touched ANYTHING that they may have touched. Wash hands thoroughly before touching around your mouth!!!

My Mother was in the Marist Hill Nursing Home recuperating from surgery to her hip. The doctor on duty there a Doctor Khory believed that because a nurse told him her scar was red that she should start a round of antibiotics. They put my mother on Keflex and she got c dif. The doctor never went in to see my mom and she got worse and worse til her white count elevated to the point of no return and my mother died from the c dif. On autopsy I was told that the C dif was so bad in my mother that it caused a Leukemia like reaction and her white count went off the charts. C-dif infection can be very dangerous if the staff at the hospital or rehab is neglectful. My Mother complained that it took staff at Marist Hill 45 minutes at a time to take her to the bathroom. This nursing facility is considered a 5 star facility and I beg to differ. Be well and care for yourself if you think you have c-dif.

Can c-dif be contracted outside of a hospital setting. My friend was not in a hospital or hospital setting, however she was working at a spa for a while, but has been in horrible pain with dirherria for sometime now. her weight is also down. she also used to like to flush out her colon. getting rid of the bad toxins. could she have been overdoing that? She is being treated with an antibotic and also now has a urinary infection. Some feedback will be greatly appreciated. Could any of this lead to having to have a colosomy?

I am a regeistered nurse and recently contracted both c-diff and klebillia pneumonia. At first, I wanted to file a workman's comp cliam because there is no doubt that I am in contact with numerous strains of bacteria in the ER. Unfortunately, filing is a waste of time, since both of these bacteria live in our systems and once immunocompromised, take over fast, causing all sorts of pathophysiological turmoil. Honestly, I thought I was going to die over the last 8 days fighting these two bacteria. I am on Flagyl and Levaquin...with the Flagyl for an extra 2 weeks on top of the Levaquin, since I need to fight the C-diff longer.

Right now, I am laying in a fetal position, hurting in my gut from this nasty illness. I only pray the antibiotics work. As a contract nurse, I cannot work until my system is no longer compromised. The doc tells me another 7 days. God help me if I ever get this again!

Have any of you ever tried using a probiotic? You know, like acidophilus in very strong concentration. I know they have reduced the cases of CDIF at several hospitals by using a strong probiotic, at least 50 billion strong.
