c**p like your post piss me off...
If your 16 year is experimenting growing up ....guess what...that is normal...
Those looking to pass the test in order to have Weight Loss Surgery are actually attempting to save their lives....Smoking is an actual ADDICTION for many, unlike your precious 16 year old.
Right or Wrong.....many of those overweight get addicted to nicotine to deal with feeling bad about themselves.....gain more weight....smoke more.... this is vicious cycle ...
Nicotine is as Addictive as Cocaine and Heroine, if not more....
So hopefully, as your post is a year old.....your child made better decisions.....and those seeking to break their addictions and striving to be healthier made their goals...
I am down 200 pounds.....
the Holier than thou people of this world are what contributed to my unhealthy decisions ......

The main reason doctors test for nicotine is delayed healing. Smoking can cause non-union, non healing, in surgery or injuries involving bones. Smoking also increases your risk for developing a post op infection. Doctors receive compensation from the government for patients with Medicare/Medicaid and they can refuse to pay if theres a “negative” result

A good one..
I've started smoking at age 13-14 and now I wish to God I hadn't
Plus a 16 year old is not even old enough to legally purchase Cigarettes..
I enjoyed smoking but taking chantix has been super helpful. now Ive gone 16 days without smoking because I have to pass a blood test and don't plan on starting again.. the extra money in my pocket is a definite bonus..
While I think the OP was inappropriate, seeing someone die due to smoking as a mother .. I'm sure I'd do the same thing..
Also, given the topic of the thread I'm a little surprised at the vitriol and snark from posts.. saying things behind a keyboard you wouldn't dare to in person is pure cowardice.

My grandmother died of lung cancer and we took care of her at home in the end so I can understand what it's like to watch a loved-one have a prolonged transition and pass painfully. That said, you can not make life choices for anyone else, regardless of how much you love them and want them to avoid physical/mental/emotional pain, health issues, etc. I will tell you I have been a smoker for over 45 years and I have NEVER had ANY health issues - smoking related or otherwise. In fact, I just had my annual checkup and once again, I'm perfectly health. I should also say I am currently currently quitting because I chose to, not because of health issues or because my mom has been nagging me for over 45 years to do so. I also plan on changing occupations shortly and wanted to know how long the nicotine replacements stay in my system. I rarely use them any more, but I keep them with me just in case something triggers a desire for a smoke that either deep breathing or a mint won't cure.
Whatever the reason you are going to the extreme of testing your child at home - if he/she is 16, this type of approach is likely to have the reverse affect. I'm guessing we can all remember being 16 and if my parents used this approach, I would have (in fact still would) find it invasive and would have made it priority to find a way around it and continue smoking out of rebellion if nothing else. It will serve to put a wedge between you at a time in development that you'd want to establish as much open communication as possible. While smoking is not optimal, there are several other things (drugs, crime, unsafe sex, etc.) that a close child-parent relationship with open communication may help to avoid.
To the folks who read this mother's post and found it upsetting.... well, just as she can't control her nearly legal age child's choices - but can only hope to influence them; none of us can truly understand her background and fear/pain she is channeling when making these choices. Fear is a powerful emotion and can cause us (and I know from experience) to make poor choices and lash-out fiercely when those choices are questioned or if someone chooses a different route. Realizing we haven't lived another's life, don't have the same strengths/weaknesses or lessons to learn- but certainly have our own challenges, it might help us to acknowledge our own shortcomings first, and then accept others are no more perfect than we are and that might just allow us to feel compassion for someone else who has lessons to learn and challenges to champion - just like we do, even if the lessons and challenges are different.
Have a blessed day everyone!

free country isn't it? the people are worried about not having continine (nicotine derivative) in their system due to complications during the surgery. I'm sorry to hear about your son, uncle and father. But no one here is trying to fraud a nicotine test, no one here is talking about buying urine to fraud a nicotine test. The right to information is something that is a right in the U.S., be happy we have access to this. No one is talking about lying, if they pass a nicotine test then they have essentially passed a prerequisite. There seems to by an underlying problem here, that being you may not trust your son.

Spoken as a TRUE non smoker. You think it's just easy peasy. Just quit. Well, I'm trying to quit. I've quit several times before. August 2017 (eclipse day) I quit. I started back December 3rd. Now August 2018 I'm quitting again. People CANNOT quit until they really want to.

I'm sorry our plight is interfering with your horrid parenting tactics. Maybe you should get off your high horse. Habitually smoking is LEGAL (not for your teen, and maybe you should concentrate on who is furnishing him with Tobacco) should in no way discriminate against us for job opportunities or medical care.

I'm a pack a day smoker. I haven't had a cigarette in three days. I have to pass a nicotine urine screen for a foot surgery. My doctor refuses to operate on a smoker. How long do I need to be smoke free to pass the urine screen?

Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things I have ever done in life! I have smoked for over 40 years and the cravings for the nicotine is super super Intense as hell and I understand why they compare it to quitting heroin. My two best friends are heavy smokers and neither of them are capable of quitting. One of them is on oxygen 24 hours a day and doesn't really even want to quit. Quitting is very very hard. I had to to it before the doctor would do my surgery. The level of physical pain I was in gave me no choice but to put the cigarettes down. Never quit trying to quit.
