Hi. My friend has been suffering from lupus for years. I was wondering if she can donate blood. She is considering this option lately and I would like to help her with some more info. Can anyone tell me something more? I would really appreciate all your replies considering this. Bye!

Hello. Usually, these patients are not advised to donate blood. The same goes for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma. They usually suffer from anaemia, so cannot give blood. Patients that use disease modifying drugs are not allowed to donate blood. Such drugs are: Imuran, methotrexate or hydroxychloroquine. Patients that used NSAIDs like ibuprofen can donate. In any case, I recommend your friend to consult a specialist before doing anything. I hope this helps. Bye!
