Almost one-fourth of strokes result from narrowing of a carotid artery. Carotid arteries carry blood to the cerebral cortex, which is responsible for most of our functioning. The narrowing is usually caused by plaque in a blood vessel. Plaque forms when cholesterol, fat builds up in the inner lining of an artery. This process is called atherosclerosis. These deposits can restrict blood from getting to the brain. Then stroke may occur.
