My father has carotid artery disease. His doctor told us that if he doesn’t treat this illness well, it can cause a stroke. Now he needs to change his lifestyle. He will use certain medications and I hope he will be much better. Is carotid artery narrowing a common procedure?

Yes. The narrowing is usually caused by plaque in a blood vessel. Plaque forms when cholesterol, fat builds up in the inner lining of an artery. If the carotid artery has severe narrowing or blockage, a procedure must be done to open the artery and allow blood flow to the brain, to prevent future stroke.
