I am going in for my second fusion because a titanium screw has broke.  I am confused because I thought titanium is one of the hardest metals out there so how come so many of us are experiencing broken screws.  This is over whelming me.  Who is manufacturing all of these malfunctioning screws?  I think that should me all of our questions.  How many people is this happening to and what we can do about it.  I'd like to know what you think about making the manufacturing company liable for their faulty equipment.  i READ THAT SOME SCREWS WERE RECALLED BUT IF THEY KEEP BREAKING DOES THAT MEAN THEY ARE STILL USING FAULTY SCREWS. THE PAIN IN MY BACK AND MY LEGS IS UNBAREABLE SO I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO DO THE NEXT SURGERY AND I AM SCARED OUT OF MY WITS.

I had my Cervical Spine Surgery at c4/5 in 2001 From a work injury and about six month from that. I was in more pain then before i had the surgery.I keep complaining and telling my Dr . I feel something in the back of my throat and it feels like the screw was poking me. He said i was crazy and that there is no way i could feel that. So he released me and i went another NEUROSURGEON . When i told him he laugh and said, well lets do another MRI and see whats going on. When we got the MRI back. He said well you are not faking it. It is broke at C4/5 We had to go back in and take it back out and skip down and fuse C6/7 to. This was in 2006.. Now in 2011I have to back for my 3rd surgery and remove c4/5 c6/7 again cause he skipped C5/ 6 and fuse all three together. I could feel the broken screw when i push in on my throat. I am waiting now for for them to reschedule my third surgery

I've read everyones postings and it appears we all had our bone fushions within the same ten year window. I ca not help but wonder who/what company made these screws, because they all broke. I have 2 broken in my neck right now. I really would like to get to the bottom of this. I will ask at my appointmet tommorrow. If anyone wants to discuss my number is 803-338-6003 this sounds like a class action.

I just found out I have 2 screws broken at the bottom of my C4-5-6 fusion. Apperently if they stay there long enough they can erode right through my esophagus! Nice to know, since I went in for "tremors". After more MRI's and CT's, I see Dr. today to decide what he should do. i did not have an accident. No clue as to how this happened. I think they need to use stronger screws!

I hope all of your problems are over by now. If so, what did they do? I have had 3 separate cervical fusions, the last one being 11-22-11. They put in the cage and now I have no pain in my neck or arms. However, what did happen was somehow they paralyzed my left vocal cord so now I don't have much of anything for a voice. I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if so did you ever get your voice back?

Hi!

I just went this past week and had x-rays taken as my arm/fingers were becoming numb all the time. Immediately, the doctor said the pain was coming from my neck. He took X-rays and I have two broken screws between C5 and C6. I also have the titanium plates. I'm now trying to obtain my medical records to see who the screw manufacturer was. My original surgeon has moved to another state. I will be going for an MRI next week.

What has happenned since you originally wrote? Did you have to have surgery? What advice did your doctors give you before any surgery?

Thank you!

AMR

I wish I could give you good news but I too still have severe pain especially when the weather is bad, the rain and humidity is not my friend. I am still confused about these screws breaking so easily especially since they are made from titanium. I get no real explanation as to why this really happens so I'm confused all I can say is you have to try hard to stay positive, don't be so hard on yourself when you can't do all the things you are use to and as soon as you can walk, stretch, and if needed see a therapist so you can work out the depression that can come from such an ordeal and last but not least if you believe in God pray, a lot. Good luck and I wish you and everyone going through this the best recovery possible. Stay strong and God bless you all.

I had c4/c5/c6 fused in 2006 and lost my voice for a few months on the right side of my vocal chords. I was told it was due to the device that they used to open the hole in my neck, but over time it will come back as mine did but, from what I’ve been reading on this sight it makes me wonder if my screws are ok. I’m a painting contractor and use my neck a lot they also implanted bone fragments from a company that was buying body parts that were stolen out of funeral homes in Newjersy and since then I found out I had Cancer of the esophagus I don’t know if it is all tied together but wow what a trip….lol I’m doing ok now 100 % cancer free thank God
Good luck

This has just happened to me. C4-5, C 5-6... I had c 4-5 done 7 years ago no issues. I had c 5-6 done last December. I am having severe pain. According to my surgeon the fusion has taken place. Now the issue is Where is all this pain coming from. I have a bolt broken and appears to be loose between my shoulders and no telling where else. I have to see a neurologist tomorrow. I hope there is some type of resolution. The pain is increadible.

I also have had 2 screws break, my first surgery in march 2012 was a 3 level upper cervical surgery, at some point when the screws broke, we dont know what caused them to break, my neurosurgeon had nothing to offer or explain, so i went back for laminectomy surgery on August 14 this year, still healing but not able to undersand why screws broke and what can be done now. Can anyone else share their opinion?
