I also have 2 broken screws. I had ACDF in December 2012 at C5-C6. It immediately relieved left arm pain and numbness going to my hand but after several months neck pain began to worsen. I did not discover broken screws until CT scan in August 2015. I have constant neck pain, pain in both arms, I've had multiple injections, ablation on right side of neck and go to PT every week. My surgeon insists that pain is not from broken screws but i just have to wonder. I am unable to work as I can not sit for more than 20 minutes or so without pain and burning in neck and face. I have not done anything strenuous to break these screws, I feel it has to be a defect. It seems that a lot of people are having similar issues. Does anyone have any information as to why so many screws are breaking?

I just had my third surgery. The first one lasted a few years, then three screws broke and one was pressing against my esophagus. The second neurosurgeon removed all of the hardware and put in a different type of hardware that worked pretty good except c6-c7. I just had that fused and they told me I have to be be careful what I do now. This is the last procedure they can do for me. I still have pieces of screws in the bone.

I have Degenerative Disc Disease. I had a 3 level fusion with cadaver bones, plate, and screws. Three years later now I have two broken screws. I was told that it would not cause me to be paralyzed. I do not have pain or numbness in my arms, but my neck hurts all the time. Some days are worse than others, but there's never a pain-free day. Mr doctor ordered an MRI and I start PT next week for exercises that may help. I already went through dry needling and that didn't help. He also said I could get pain shots. He said he could operate again, but there's only a 70% chance it will get better. I go back to see him next month to discuss further. From what I've read on this site, having broken screws is apparently common. It doesn't sound like something that should be left alone, but that seems to be what most of the doctors want to do. I just don't want to go through another surgery and it not work.

I had a double acdf c-4/c-5, c-5/c-6 on 6-3-16 in Nov. of 2016 the xrays showed a screw snapped in two on c-6 right side it's now feb. 2017 and my orthopedic surgeon says since I'm having so much pain he's going to go in thru the back of my neck this time and will re-enforce the plate where the screw is broken, I'm scared to get more surgeries especially that two out of three surgeries I've had have made me worse then how I started I also have 3 more disc herniation's on my cervicle spine so should I be getting a discogram done to make sure the pain is coming from the area of the broken screw?

I had spinal fusion on levels C4-C7 in April of 2001. A month ago I went to ER for severe pain in neck and arm. They did a CT scan with contrast. It showed that at level C6 the fixation plate is fractured, 2 of the screws are broken and the bone in my neck is fractured. Met with my neuro surgeon who did the surgery and he asked if I had any trauma to my neck. I said no and that I'm pretty sure I'd remember if I did. He said I need surgery to fix this as the only thing keeping the screws from moving is a locking mechanism. He immediately took me off work as he doesn't want me reaching, lifting, bending or hyper extending my neck as he said that would cause the fractured plate to shift which could cause the screws to become dislodged and then he said that would be catastrophic. I was scheduled for surgery tomorrow (06/13 /2017) but got a call from Dr saying surgery is postponed due to the fact that I have a bladder infection that was found during preoperative lab tests. Both the Dr and myself are puzzled as to how this happened. Does anyone know about recalls on titanium plates and screws? And did those breaking cause the fracture in my neck? He said I am walking around with a broken neck. Really is freaking me out.

That's scary. I too had the same surgery, three levels, and have two screws broken. My nuerosurgeon stated that it was fused so it didn't need to be fixed.....

I had my surgery 6 yrs ago c-4/6. With plate and screws. When they did my surgery in the report he said he had an excellent bite on the screws and broke my caurdal and so put another screw there as well im assuming this is the triangular fracture ivecread about with these surgeries. Just tonight about an hour ago i went to take a drink of my pop and had excrusiating ripping stabbing pain in my neck. Im terrified! I dont want to have another surgery. I dont know what i should do. Im getting sharp pain in like almost a straight line on left side of my neck up to the top of my head. Almost a burning sensation in the top of my left shoulder. Im so worried im shaking im so scared
